Back when Duel was first released, who would've ever guessed that the man who directed this straightforward thriller was destined to go on to become the greatest filmmaker of all-time and direct some of the greatest, most iconic, acclaimed, most beloved & timeless movies ever made.

It's insane that this movie was Steven Spielberg's directorial debut!

This could easily be in my top ten favourite films. It’s one of the most re-watchable suspense films ever

I love this movie and the truck.
I saw it as a child in the late 70s : The reason why I became a truck driver.
Cary Loftin, the real truck driver in the film, was a consummate professional.
RIP Cary 🏴‍☠️

Duel debuted in 1971 as an ABC Movie of the Week. It was so popular, that Spielberg added 16 minutes to the original 74 minute TV film to qualify as a movie for theaters. It received distribution overseas and was a hit in France and Italy. Shot in 13 days, Spielberg's first effort showed the promise of a talented director.

In the scene where after he left the diner and the truck was waiting for him, he should have turned around and gone the other way. Even if he lost his job. I bet this has happened many times on the road. There are crazy people out there.

I am offended that this movie is now underrated today. As someone who clearly seen duel.

That’s how you know Spielberg was a legend in the making if this was one of his first films 😮‍💨

They wanted to use back projection on this film, which would have looked crap. Fortunately Spielberg said no, and got his way.

This movie is cool even now. I watched it first time only few years ago, and I liked it. Modern movies with their huge budgets and computer special effects aren't as impressive as Duel. The old rusty truck scaries only with its appearance, no matter who its driver is and why he kills passenger cars on roads.

Speed limiters in the UK, with all trucks limited to 60 mph, means this sort of chase could never happen on most roads, but you still get a few nasty truckers on lesser roads that will try The Duel thing, 9 years ago, I had some guy on the A5092, one of the worst roads in England with bad bends and narrow lanes, sit right up my back for 8 miles with the lights and horn going as I was too slow to pull away from a junction. Scary as you had a huge Scania lorry up your back that could have caused an accident, but at least he turned off to complete a delivery.
