I went back three times before I finally said enough. He is a classic narcissist. I knew immediately who he was but circumstances pushed it and my parents finally had to move across the country to get away from him. I then moved back three times before I was done. It was familiar and predictable enough to manage but for short periods of time. I was 16 and was finally done at 20. He is alone to this day. I am in my 50s, happily married to the best man anyone can ask for. I am glad I experienced it to know what I definitely don't want in my life.
Trust your instincts and don't make excuses for them. They are who they are. Believe them the first time they show you their true self. Run
