Pantry Pride and A&P both bring back sweet memories of my childhood. Thank you for taking me back, Rhetty!

it does suck that small stores are overshadowed by big Walmart, Albertsons, Kroger or whatever your regional store is.

When mom dressed up to get ready to go to the store, we would go to "Rosco Tempo", "Pantry", "Lucky" or "Farmers Market"....I always liked going to Lucky because there was a Chinese food restaurant next door with direct entry and Mom would buy some chicken fried rice on the way out love those memories

I, live in Detroit, Michigan. And I still remember when Detroit had 6, major supermarket chain stores and they are:
1.A&P
2.CHATHAM COMPLETE FOOD CENTERS
3.FARMERJACK SUPERMARKETS
4.GREAT SCOTT !SUPERMARKETS
5.KROGER/BI-LO SUPERMARKETS
6.WRIGLEY'S SUPERMARKETS/PACKERS
Right now, there's only 3, major chain stores and they are:
1.KROGER
2.MEIJER SUPERSTORES
3.WAL*MART, SUPERSTORES.

As a kid, the very small town we lived in had yet to have a Wal-Mart move into it (or nearby anyway), so my granddad would always shop at the local IGA. Really good memories of that.

When I was a kid there was a grocery store called Red & White that was approximately 2 to 3 minutes from where I live. My mom, my brother and myself would go there almost daily to buy groceries. We were sad when it went out of business so they could make room for CVS Pharmacy but we do have fond memories of the store. Thank you for the trip back down memory lane ❤😊.

Thanks rhetty. Growing up in NY, those grocery markets do bring back memories as I walked the aisles endlessly with my mom and sisters. Other grocery markets on Long Island I also grew up on was Finast, King Kullen, and Pathmark.

I have very fond memories of shopping at Magruder's and Memco in Northern Virginia every Saturday with my dad. My mother hated grocery shopping but my father, who had grown up quite poor and become quite prosperous, absolutely loved filling our cart with quality food. He was a foodie and also stopped at various ethnic markets for exotic treats. Delightful memories.

My mom shopped at Dominick’s in Chicago. She was saying the other day she would have liked to have grocery delivery back then because she didn’t drive until she was 34 and we moved to the suburbs. She used to get a lot of exercise that way.

When I was a kid my mom used to take me shopping at Alpha Beta, Giants, and then Smiths in Southern California. Giants seemed huge and Smiths had a lot of tasty sandwiches and Chinese food.

In TX, we had Skaggs Alpha Beta as well as the A&P and Piggly Wiggly. Food Lion tried to enter the market but failed miserably leaving behind a ton of large empty buildings repurposed as churches, call centers and antique malls mostly.

I remember as a kid helping my Dad packing shelves he worked for Nabisco years ago. And many of those stores are long gone like Grand Union, Pantry Pride, Save-A-Lot, Basics, Sun, Treasury, Jeffersons and Phar-mor. This was in South Florida back then. Miss those days so much.

Anyone remember Fedmart? Hired as a bagger during high school in Phoenix Arizona in 1981, worked until 1982 when it went out of business. It was located at the south entrance to Metrocenter shopping mall where Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was filmed inside.

The stuff sold at grocery stores back then tasted better than today.

Big Bear 😢 I loved that store. I still remember this donut the bakery made called dreamboat. It was the best donut I’ve ever had.
We went to the Big Bear on Broad Street in Lincoln Village in Columbus.
