Every one of these stores- we’re a big part of my childhood!! We had Sears, Mongomery Wards, JC Penny, Woolworth’s, Zayer— here in the Midwest is where we did all of our shopping!! Getting the Sears Wishbook catalog at Christmas as a kids was the best!!😍😍😍

WOOLWORTH is technically still in business. WOOLWORTH had a shoe section, that was fairly popular. When WOOLWORTH went out of business, they kept the shoe store running. That shoe store is Foot Locker.

K-Mart can still be found in Australia. Woolworths operates as a chain of supermarkets. And most, maybe all, shopping malls still operate.

This brought back great memories of years of wonderful shopping experiences, especially at Rich’s. I don’t think big retailers edging out smaller chains or the convenience of online shopping is all that has killed the department store attraction. Back when many of these stores were in business, most people still knew how to act in public. They were civil and considerate of other people. They didn’t speak loudly (either in person or on a cell phone). They didn’t wear a their pajamas to the store. They didn’t bring the dog to the store and claim it was a “service animal.” They didn’t allow their children to act like demonic monkeys. They didn’t feel shoplift constantly and drive up prices. Plus, on the store side of the equation, they hired sufficient employees to help you and people were expected to provide good customer service (it was unthinkable that they would be on a personal call while at work). It was actually a fun, pleasant experience, not at all like today. What has happened to our society?

I remember that Sears outdoor department had barbie size tents set up on top of the shelves to show what the tents looked like. I wanted one so badly for my barbies! I also remember cutting out the drawn pictures of people in the old Sears cataloges in my grandma's basement for paperdolls, before they used pictures of real people to model their clothes. Oh, how I wish she had held onto all those old cataloges, now, instead!
