Windows Update is a free service from Microsoft that provides Windows users with system updates. The idea for what would become Windows Update can be traced back all the way to the development of Windows 98 in the mid-1990s. Watch to learn more...

With thanks to @videospoint937 and @ApFaqTech for the video clips of Bill Gates, @IBTimesUK for the video clip of Steve Ballmer and @LucasHolt for the video clip showing the Windows 98 checking for updates redirect loop.

Two things I'd like to mention:
1. I like how in every video you hammer the "me" in Windows ME, as that is the correct way to pronounce it and not many people know that, making these videos a sort of PSA
2. You could also easily use the software for updating the old OSes, and then create a disk image with the updates all installed so whenever you'd need a clean install all you'd have to do is load the image.

Windows Update before Windows 8 is acceptable for me 😄. By the way, Happy New Year for you 🥳

In Windows Vista & 7, you had to download/install hundreds of individual updates that could take several hours. Microsoft fixed that in Windows 10 with cumulative updates

Fun fact: The Microsoft Update Catalog website is still active under the hood despite the outdated site look and manual. It still covers newest updates, including Windows 11.

Windows Vista also bought CBS (Component Based Servicing) so that users didn't have to worry in case of a power failure while updating Windows. It first checks if all the necessary files are there, then continues the update while checking which files have been modified by the update so that it could simply revert the changes made by the update if an update wasn't successful. If an update was successful, it marks that the update was successful and nothing has been damaged. If the update wasn't successful, it would check if CBS marked the update was successful, which it didn't, and then kick starts the rollback process.

Did you know that Windows Update was backported into Windows 95 via Internet Explorer and ActiveX?

- Windows Vista and Windows 7 : Using Control Panel
- Windows 8 and 8.1 : Using Settings app and Control Panel

Older operating systems should only be used for stuff that don't run on the modern operating systems, But if you do that never connect them to the internet.

Feature updates are just new operating systems but without new names and usually the same wallpapers, and they're forced on users running unsupported versions. Windows 10 Anniversary Update, for example, is quite a different OS when compared to Windows 10 or Windows 10 November Update. It's a new operating system in every way except name. They really should start using point releases (e.g. Windows 11 2022 Update would be Windows 11.1).

I wonder, if Windows Update didnt exist until build 1351 of Memphis (which would become Windows 98 eventually), how would updates be delivered?
A separate CD?
