CRISPR-CAS9 is a revolutionary new way in which scientists can edit DNA in the lab. It uses molecular machinery from a particular species of bacteria to target an enzyme to a very specific place in the DNA, where it can perform its editing function.

Here we show how the CRISPR-CAS9 system works, and what some of its advantages are compared to techniques that scientists have been using in the past.
