My mom joined a hiking club when she lived in Germany. She said the men just hurled full speed ahead; they wanted to get to the top of the mountain where there was a pub where they could drink beer. One man always gave her a hard time for carrying “vogelfutter” (sp? I don’t speak German [eta: thanks for the help with spelling!]) or “bird seed (it was granola, haha). She eventually joined the kids group as a chaperone because they went slower and stopped to occasionally look at flowers.
