2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, now in its second generation, continues to stand out in the limited market of non-luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs. Although it shares its chassis and infotainment system with the Nissan Rogue, the Outlander PHEV offers unique styling and driving dynamics. It is a seven-passenger vehicle equipped with a conventional 2.4L inline-four gasoline engine, a 20 kW lithium-ion battery, and three electric motors. The gasoline engine powers an electric generator that drives the front axle via one of the electric motors and a CVT with variable ratios. The rear axle is driven directly by another electric motor, bypassing the need for a traditional transmission. This setup results in a vehicle with respectable total horsepower and torque figures.

It doesn't have a CVT, it has a Single Speed Trans-Axle GKN Multi Mode E-Transmission.

Had one since last July. Pros: Great power and AWD system, nice interior, quiet interior with good features like heads up display, heat pump, seat fold down levers in the back, heated seats for four passengers, memory seat for passenger, and auto wipers/headlights. Cons: No room for a spare, 3rd row seat is pretty much only for kids-I wish I could remove it, steering is far too light, some issues with the mirrors not folding back or getting stuck (a known manufacturer issue). Bose speakers sound nice, but are very weak in the back seat. Occasionally have issues with the volume not working and having to reboot the console. Overall however this has been a great vehicle. Been getting almost 60 MPG for an AWD SUV which is hard to beat. $7500 off lease bonus also helps a ton. A great value for the price.

Sorry but incorrect has a CVT. Uses the GKN multi mode single speed transmission. We have the 2023 SEL Premium. Excellent car. Most of our daily driving is within the EV range. Does not have an RPM tachometer. Instead shows kw demand

At about 3:30, you talk about explaining to people that this is NOT an EV. But at speeds below 70 km/hr, with a charged battery, it IS an EV, with an on-board charger.

Sorry @CarGurus but there is no CVT transmission on this vehicle, I don't know how you found one.

I don’t agree with EPA comments

I always gets an average range of 80 kilometers on ev power and consume 7 liters per 100 km on gasoline. Unlike typical PHEVs, this vehicle primarily functions as an electric car, consistently charging the battery regardless of the driving models & power and tarmac mode is one of the fun to drive modes i!

Also, as someone else pointed out, at about 9:45, you state that the engine is revving at 4, 000 rpm when it is charging the battery. That thing on the display is NOT a tachometer. The engine is NOT spinning at 4, 000 rpm. It's running at whatever speed is the most efficient for charging battery at that time. Or, if you are accelerating heavily at the time, the ICE will be running at whatever speed it needs to while it is still connected to the front axle, via the single speed transmission. So, there could be times when it might be running at 4, 000 rpm, but I expect that would be a speed of around 130 km/hr, or thereabouts.

What is with no start cold battery at -20c. Did they fix the battery preheat for cold climate? Should we wait until a solution like a true battery heater comes back?

4k is kw production during charge mode. Engine doesnt run at 4k rpm. Charge more still gave me 26 28 mpg on long drive. I charged and used the batttery and repeated the cycle and received 38mpg overall.

What is Mitsubishi doing to fix the impact of cold weather causing the car to not work?

You waited for the end to discuss the exact trim level. Almost all the things you pointed out, leather trim, massage seats, 110 power outlets are ONLY on what SEL Premium

It also DOES NOT HAVE 3 ELECTRIC MOTORS. Is ANYTHING you say in this video correct?

At about 8:35 you state that you cannot do one pedal driving in most PHEV's, but you can in the Outlander PHEV. That is because, contrary to one of your earlier statements, the Outlander PHEV is an EV at speeds below 70 km/hr, when it is driving as a pure EV, except that it has an on board battery charger.

Us usual, here we go with all of the "actually, it's not a CVT" comments. As someone who gives presentations for a living, I see it all the time. Yes, you're technically right and yes, it triggers me! Grr! ☺

I love my Mitsubishi ❤ it has a core Japanese elegance that seems to be fading away.
