what happens if you don't activate windows 10? nothing, but Microsoft terms of service states. "You are authorized to use this software only if you are properly licensed and the software has been properly activated with a genuine product key or by other authorized method." so in theory, you are supposed to activate Windows 10 to use it. You will have some restrictions like, no lock screen, background, wallpaper settings, colors, taskbar, all will be grayed out.

I’ve been using Windows since Windows 7, when I received it on CD. When I switched to a download copy, activation failed (so long ago I can’t remember when), I’ve been unactivated. I even called Microsoft tech support for assistance activating my copy of Windows and got to a level 3 tech and no one down there was able to activate my copy. I’ve never run into anything I couldn’t do with my unactivated copy.

This was a problem I got after buying a computer in Thailand a while back. It did not take too many weeks before I started to get all these annoying messages that I had to activate win 10! It was bothering me a lot! The shop had given me a copy of win 10 without an activation number!!
I solved it by downloading some sort of code that faked the activation code. I am not sure if it will work when I eventually get back to Thailand to try to run the pc again!

You can bypass the restrictions for the settings by using registry editor.

Windows 8.1 legit user but don't really pay much attention to products key untill updated to win10 and never activated as don't remember the key. Now machine isn't booting at all even tried everything. Bought new ssd and installed win10 today itself without an activation key...your video pops up and glad that I could go on...

ive a copy of win10 pro which has been running unactivated and debloated using a script. ram usage went from 4gb out of the box to roughly 1.5gb so even works on older pcs

Sorry if this is a question you've answered before! I have an old work computer and I'm backing up Documents and Pictures with a bunch of folders that have [Date Modified] times going back years (2013-2021). When I transferred these folders to a 32GB usb all the old timestamps transferred over, but when I move these folders from the usb to my new PC all the [Date modified] times change over to Today. I know the individual files themselves retain their original timestamps, but is there a way to have the original folders also retain their original timestamps? When looking for files I often go by the year the folders were modified. If I can't keep the original timestamps on the folders I might end up just working off of the usb instead. Thanks, Britec09!

They want your personal data, so you are a cash cow to them, whether 10 is activated or not.

I cant restart in Safe Mode. I've tried the bcdedit hack, the f8 method and everything else. I assumed it was because my downloaded and verified copy of Windows 10 is not activated. You can do some customizing of things like lock screen and desktop background by using Paint and File Explorer without activating windows.

The background screen color may also default to black. That's what happens with Win7.

Been using windows 10 for around 7+ years and you can easily use it and bypass a lot like startup background, taskbar being locked and OBVIOUSLY wallpaper...these days you can bypass pretty much anything.
