If You See This on the Ground, Don't Pick It Up!

You're walking along the riverbank. The hot Georgia sun beats down on your neck. That’s when you notice something strange on the ground. Looks like a quarter-sized black coin with a weird pattern on it. You bend over for a closer look. Is it a coin? You crouch down on one knee to pick up your newfound treasure. As soon as your finger touches it, you pull your hand back as fear wells in your gut. It’s hairy. It’s no ancient treasure… it’s a huge spider!

While it may seem like we know a lot about animals, it’s actually not true. For example, we had no idea that cassowary is the most dangerous bird in the world or that the Hawk Moth Caterpillar can change the shape of its body to look like a menacing serpent? The Golden Bee Fly sneaks into bee nests and lays eggs there. Its larvae hatch and feed on the bees and flower nectar. We often publish curious facts about the animal world and it’s time to learn something new about it today.

My parents were kind of diligent with the statement “ don’t touch if it looks weird “ or “ just don’t pick up, anything off the ground “. My dad used to hunt, also is a Vietnam Vet, and he told me it’s better not to touch anything off the ground, and always kept your eyes on the ground or in front of you . ( I would assume after being in SouthEast Asia kind of taught him the same, lots of weird bugs and things down there... )

We have those Hummingbird Hawk Moths here in Western Japan. Cooliest thing I have ever seen. And yes is was feeding on our flower gardens in front of our shop.😄
