Volvo V50 1 year on

So I've had the Volvo for a year now, what do I think about it? If you 'research' on the internet you can find horror stories about just about every car out there which can be confusing for used car buyers. So, what is my real world experience of the V50?

I bought mine used 2004 volvo v50 A year later, I did +34 000 since. Nothing to say, just powerful and reliable car. I went to germany hungaria poland romania france.. Mountains.. Sea.. Confortable et powerfull. Love it

My dad had a 2006 v50 sport, it was the chain driven 2.0 diesel, he did 75, 000 miles in 4 years, and besides general wear and tear it was absolutely solid, it never once failed

Owned a Volvo V50 and owned it for 5 years, beautiful car, ever so reliable, cost me nothing apart from brake pads and tyres, used it everyday, only changed it for XC60 4WD to tow caravan with, kept that for 5 years, Volvo against German cars, give me a Volvo anyday 😊

Thanks. Appreciate the info on ease of repair etc. Just bought a 1.6 phase 2 2007 model which im picking up today. Gonna chip it to gain a bit. 109 to about 133 which should give it a bit more pep

I have had my V50 1.6D Drive E for about 2 to 3 months and I don’t have a lot of bad things to say about it, except for that the Steering Servo/power steering very suddenly stopped working (suddenly as i was just about to turn when it happened), I’m a soon to be mechanic so I instantly knew what was wrong when the steering went heavy.

I had also noticed what I would call extensive dripping of fluids under the car, userly it is just condescension water from the AC system.

I later filled the system up with power steering fluid and tested the system by turning the steering wheel back and forth and it became apparent that it was “pissing” power steering fluid.
The steering was the leaky offender and therefore had to be replaced.

Thanks for the update, it was your original video that got me thinking about a V50 as a tow car so it's great to hear what you think of it after using it for a while. I'm hoping to pick one up later in the year. Have you ever checked the gearbox oil temperature while towing? I had to fit an extra gearbox oil cooler to my older V70 as the oil was getting far to hot whilst towing without it, I'm hoping the standard setup is better in the V50

I have Volvo v50 r design 2012 replaced the clutch about 6 months a go as the suddenly stopped working while I was driving. And the clutch was fine from that point until now when I parked my car in a car park came back and couldn't not move my car as the clutch would not go down and had to get towed home by rac and that was about a week and a half a go the car was towed from my house to the garage yesterday so hopefully they will be able to fix it

I'm thinking of getting a V50 to replace my aging 2001 Ford Focus. Love the Focus to bits, but the years are really catching up with it now. Every MOT feels like I'm being mugged :S

I bought the phase1 version as my first car, guess im partial to any criticism due to it.. but.. its cheap! An alternator had to be replaced one year prior to the service milage point where they replace that thing, guess its one of them 1/100 thing! Being the 10th owner of the car, may have something to do with how it has been operated, of its 2006-2020 lifespan.. cant complain, love the car, i treat it as best as i can!
Which competitors to this would you, reader, suggest to me, if i were to buy a new one today? :D
