🩺 Ask Doctor Hansen:

Roasted coffee beans contain small quantities of a compound called acrylamide. In high amounts, acrylamide can be harmful. There are even concerns that it may also cause cancer. However, research suggests that drinking coffee in moderation is generally safe and may even have a range of health benefits

Oddly enough most studies have found a positive correlation between coffee intake and longevity

Coffee has hundreds of chemicals in it. Some are quite beneficial. Isolating acylamide in a conversation about coffee is truly an oversimplification.

My mom just turned 91. She has been drinking coffee all of her life. 1 cup in the morning, sometimes 2. Usually drinking it with a splash of Lactaid milk but no sugar. She started drinking coffee black as a young girl of 9. She has been thin all of her life and has never suffered from diabetes or heart related diseases. So whatever the level of acrylamide in her coffee, it hasn't affected her lifestyle or longevity. I expect her to live into her mid or late 90's just like her parents who were also regular, everyday coffee consumers.

Dang! Everything on the market is hazardous for us to consume. We are all going to die.

My granny drank coffee every day, usually with half and half, no sugar.
She died tragically at age 97...peacefully in her sleep.

I quit coffee 14 days ago and I’m very surprised of how it’s affected me. It’s quite worrying how well I’ve been sleeping and dreaming. My stomach is flatter and I feel like am losing weight. My hair, nails and skin are growing quicker. Better performance in the gym. I drank around 2 -3 cups of black coffee per day. No sugar, no cream or anything added.

"Although coffee contains small quantities of acrylamide, research suggests that drinking coffee may actually protect against certain types of cancer, as well as provide other health benefits." - Medical News Today article titled "Is the acrylamide in coffee harmful to health?" quoting several studies.

My mother drank a lot of coffee and ate donuts until she died at 90yrs. And same with my father, only the coffee. Of course, they grew up in the agrarian society of the Mediterranean and ate very little processed foods until they moved to North America. But still in the 1960s there wasn't as much processed food. Then I was born and I loved my hot dogs and Pop Tarts! Love the scientific explanation doc, and I am much more aware to practice eating whole foods and intermittent fast. But no matter what, I will still enjoy my coffee! (and green tea). Thanks doctor!

Well, my first reaction was quitting coffee drinking here and now. Then I watched the next video dr Hansen is referring to and realized that we are helplessly surrounded by a great variety of chemicals causing cancer and other health issues and no one will go safe. I think I'll have my 3-6 cups of coffee anyway, there are more important/dangerous stuff to sort out fro my daily life. And coffee is related to a lower risk of diabetes.

This simply reinforces the importance of being MODERATE in all things you consume and avoid daily addiction to any one thing.
My grandparents lived to 98 and 99. They ate so little processed food. They spent long hours outside socializing with neighbors, working their gardens and simply walking the hills. Neither were big coffee drinkers, they didn't smoke, and cooked all meals at home with substantial fiber intake and really small portions of animal protein. I recall my grandfather well into his 70s walking to the local market several miles away and carrying his own bags every day. They never stored much food, everything had a short shelf life. Neither grandparent took ANY daily medication because the big three (blood sugar, blood clotting, and cholesterol) were never left unchecked or uncontrolled. Meanwhile immediate family members who followed none of these practices including some of their own children did not make it past 64 passing of cancer, heart disease and diabetics complications.

Mom passed at 98 years old, drank coffee everyday. I'm 68 and have had coffee everyday since 5. Who knows.

My chronic 30 year back pain is gone after quitting coffee. So I believe I am better off without it.

There’s no way that I’m going to quit drinking coffee. I’ll die of something other than coffee regardless.

Thank you Dr Hansen. Though I've got to say - the oldest people here in Sweden are heavy coffee drinkers, really strong coffee as well...

My dad has drank coffee all day, everyday for almost 70 years. Literally, from the time he wakes up until an hour or so before bed. He’ll be 86 this year with normal bloodwork and is still going strong. ❤💪

Interesting that in this video and the other one on dangerous foods, high-heat seems to be a frequent villain in turning a food from safe into unhealthy. It's fascinating that cooking is one of the biggest advantages that has allowed us to spend less time eating and more time developing innovations and scientific advances, and yet it might be aging us at the same time. As always, it's important to find a balance.
