In this video, we're discussing how you can use Assets to personalize your games. Are assets good to use? Should you create everything by your own?

There have been quite a lot of rumors around this topic, so I decided I'd give my two cents. I also want to know what YOU think of this! Do you believe using assets is a good habit?

In my younger days I learned 3d modeling and 2d art to be that lone wolf game dev. Now I have a day job and a small child needing my time. Buying into the asset store has enabled me to get to the fun parts of my game dev hobby and skip the tedium of arting background stuff. I find it best to make the player's avatar by hand and use asset store enemies and enviroments. When my kid gets old enough to walk the game dev path with me I want to have a solid back log of snipets and generic assets to make interesting stuff on the fly.

Well the biggest concerns for me are:
Does it fit with my games artstyle / design and feel
Is the price worth what i get from it
How much time does it save me to adapt the assets to my gamestyle
What things do i actually need from this pack and which are just waste of space/money

There are a lot of things to consider. While there definitely are amazing assets out there (especially for low poly in unity), you always have to look at your plans for the project and what you want and need. Dont design after packs or use a lot of them because the assets will be known in other games mostly. So you either have to find the perfect assetpack and make something awesome out of it. Or take longer and make the assets yourself.

I did everything you said in the first 2 minutes of the video first-timers shouldn't do, I am now 10 months into my first android game and it is starting to take shape. Thank you :)

The asset store is a godsend for me. I learned so much picking some projects apart. Now I turn to the store for things I cant do myself (or cant be bothered with). Yea some is art some is code but all needs modification and is no substitute for good old honest effort. There are plenty of games with unique assets that look like a copy of other stuff anyways. Learn as much as you can but by all means the asset store is a great resource. Recognizable assets or not, if your game is good it will show.

All ya'll talking shit about people using purchased assets.. you forgot to leave a link to a finished title that you solo produced every stitch of code, art, model, widget, animation, mesh items, all by yourself and completed it in a time-frame that didn't leave the game behind the curve of technology by the time you finished.. I'll be waiting for your links before you respond..

Listening to Sykoo talk about game development whilst game developing is lit fam

I think it depends on what kind of assets you are planning to purchase. Buying assets does make you look unprofessional if those assets are popular. Models have this the worst because you can easily recognize them. Sound effects and music fall into a similar boat. The problem with scripts is that you easily run into problems trying to make other people's scripts work together. The only exception to that problem is editor extensions. If there is any category of assets I would recommend you should use for sure, it would be shaders, since shader code is confusing and it's hard to tell when 2 games use the same shaders. Not to mention they hardly ever conflict with one another.

if it fits my game's art and if it is not too expensive, why lose time modeling in blender right?

People who talk down on using assets made by others in your game are not smart. What matters is whether or not the game designer composes the parts of the game in a fun, engaging, and creative way.

I use assets to learn how to do things. I mess with them and modify them to see what I can learn.

Trees houses chairs, river textures, volumetric clouds I understand. Build your own damn houses, monsters and other stuff though. I'll even give you particles like fire, snow and rain. But magic. Nope do it yourself.

Common sense stuff - when you fix your house do do it all yourself or hire experts in their field...same with everything else for best results dont do everything yourself (unless u want to) as making a game is hard and takes a long time...if I had to create my own models and music and sound effects would 4 times longer (at least).

I'm just wondering if it's even possible to make a good NPC system, how do you make them say, hold someone hostage in a store while yelling at someone. Making them do things you do in real life. Is it possible? Or will it cost me a lot.

how to upload games on steam? or where upload?

I want to try to get more devs into a developer live stream to talk about game development concepts for beginner developers. Maybe @Sykoo would like to be a part of it at some point in the future?

The way I see it is, there are many assets on the store that save time.
Want to code your own time/weather system? Or use a high quality asset on the store that does it all?
Not good at 3D modelling and need some buildings for your RTS?
Need sound for your game for guns shooting, or footsteps, (or whatever else)?

Asset store is a good source for some things.

The problem nowadays is with the community. Sorry, there, I said it.
People want to crank out games as fast as they can to get their stuff out there, with little regard for the quality of the product they're releasing. Look on Steam, or Itch, or GameJolt...so much quickly made junk.
How much pre-testing did the developers do? How much player testing, and feedback was done?
My bet, not much at all on most of the indie games out there.

how do you know which game use which assets?

I personally prefer creating game assets myself - it takes like 3 times longer to finish your game, but at least I know it's all original.
