This book devastated me and I absolutely needed it during this lonely summer of 2024. It's a time capsule of life in the 40's in the deep south. Spectacular. Thanks for the review!

This is one of my all-time favourites, I read it at 20 and it got me through a sad time. I can confirm her others (I've only read all but her play) are very much the same in encouraging kindness to misunderstood people in society, although they are shorter and so less well-rounded than this (her best I think). If you really dig around you might also find her nursery rhymes, which let me tell you, are probably as you'd expect them to be!

I started reading it then watched the movie .Your review is heartfelt and i loved that you and the writer are the same age, 23 years old, which is really way too young to be so wise which is why your review honors the writer.
I will go back to reading the book.

The book and movie are enduring classics.  More people should read this.  It would help us all to be better people.  I also really revere Clock with no Hands by Carson Mc Cullers. All her books make me cry and they live on in my heart.

Thanks for the review. Your point is well taken. I grew up in the South of the Civil Rights era and can remember hearing whites say that they were glad not to have been born black, so the character's desire to have been born white is understandable and valid in the world he lived in.

I completely agree with everything you’ve said here; this is a stunning novel, and I adore McCullers’ writing.  I loved all of the different characters she crafted here; they all seemed so different, but worked so well together as a cast.  I’m guessing you’re a fan of Southern Gothic?  Have you ever read Flannery O’Connor’s short stories?  Fabulous review.
