I’ve read this book twice. The book is immense, especially from such a young writer.

Hi Eston. This was a great review! This book, one of the few changed the way I viewed literature many years ago. McCullers showed that it was possible for an author to really see and express what is in the human heart so that we see aspects of ourselves in her characters. No one in my opinion could express the loneliness of the human soul better than McCullers. Although Singer is unable to speck or hear, he is the most empathetic person in the story in my opinion. Others felt that they could bare their souls to him without judgment. I always thought it ironic that he was called Singer, and perhaps he was a singer in a certain way in that his kindness and attention to others expressed the beauty of his soul. Mick is another tragic character in that she has so much potential that will never be expressed because of economic circumstances. If you ever get the chance please read The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and Member of the Wedding by McCullers, they are both wonderful studies of loneliness. Thanks Eston, have a good weekend.

I read this book in 1967! In New Zealand. I liked how you closely read Carson's book.

I saw the film of the book 50 yrs ago and just rewatched it again - it had a profound affect on me back then and the same today .Listening to your review I certainly get the impression that the film falls far short of the book, to think the book was written by so young an author is quite astonishing and tho' from the 1940's it remains so relevant today - Thank You

I learned about this book from the great movie starring John Travolta "A Love Song For Bobby Long". I plan to watch the movie staring Sandra Lock and read the book at some point.

try to look at it by the wider umbrella of Isolation. everything is linked, under, and related to it. It's not really about gender conformity, it's about isolation.

same with the discusion of political ideology

same with the story of the Doctor who is biased against all white people but the one who he can project upon

isolation, not loneliness. cause and effect. loneliness and everything else is the effect, not the cause
