*PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING ABOUT ANYTHING*
Due to the sheer popularity of this video I am going to make a full length version thoroughly going over how to swap the GPU. If you need help in the meantime please read the following.

To check if your laptops gpu can be swapped simply search your laptops name and “MXM” after. If you find people saying it’s “soldered to the motherboard” you cannot swap the gpu.

*Info About The Laptop In It’s Current State:*
I recently got the 2 heatpipe cooler for the GPU and it was definitely needed since the 980M thermal throttles under significant load with the 1 heatpipe cooler. Under lighter loads <80% it will not throttle so the 1 heatpipe cooler can be used as a temporary solution but never long term.

*Note:*
As of October 2nd, the 2 heatpipe cooler handles the gpu fine even though some of you claim that it’s not enough for the 980M. I’m tired of you people pestering me about it when the laptop works as it should. I’ve been rebuilding laptops and building PCs for almost six years now so there’s no need to call me a stupid idiot and put me down. If I see that shit again your getting blocked.

*Specs:*
Model: HP Elitebook 8770w (2012)
CPU: Intel i7-3630QM
RAM: 24GB DDR3
Storage: 240GB Sata SSD & 500GB HDD
GPU: MSI GTX 980M 4GB (1617)

A 980 is still good enough for 1080p gaming so its a relevant upgrade.

Great short!
I wanted to see a real quick how do you remove and install MXM GPU.
Thanks!

Good short Isaac, I suggest having a bigger heatsink to accommodate the temperature of that GTX 980m, there are a few in Ebay but if all is well, no need. Happy gaming and may that gpu serve you well.

I wish laptops were upgradable like they were from back in the day when you could actually upgrade the CPU over even GPU in this case. Now of days you'd be lucky to have even an option to upgrade your memory.

That heatsink was meant for the shorter mxm type, you might experience some mild thermal issues with the vrms since its not fully covered

My Dell precision m6800 has MXM too and I love it. I currently have a FirePro 5100 in it.

Fun fact: On some laptops at least, you can use an MXM to M.2 NVMe adapter board and fit an SSD instead!

Last december i upgraded my MSI GT 70 laptop's GPU from Nvidia 970M 3GB to Nvidia 1060 6GB. I bought it from AliExpress on the black friday promotion for 135 euros, then sold my old nvidia 970m for 65 euros. The olny downside is that i have to mod the drivers, otherwise the card is not recognised in windows.

DAMN THIS IS TOO COOL. There's any reason besides money so they don't do this with today's laptops???
...imagine having a 2080 laptop that you can upgrade to 3080, damn

Before Graphics Cards and Processors were permanently attached to the motherboard. In 2000 until 2018 and today, Laptop Motherboards are modular to replace the CPU or GPU, and other things to complement or power them such as batteries, cmos batteries, hard drives, and Ram too. But after 2018, most laptop brands no longer use modular motherboards, because it is considered not very efficient or takes up space. And also non-modular laptops (without replacing the cpu and gpu and removable batteries) are considered more compatible and simple while the price of production costs is quite cheap.

Mxm was abandoned a while ago, and not all bios support all gpu's.
Only old laptops will have mxm.
I have one, but it will only run with a 285 atm

This is cool! I don't know why modern laptop gaming can't swap any GPU anymore. I wish if they made like this rather buying new laptop gaming. It would be cool.
