Can You Put a GPU on a MOTHERBOARD?

Why can't you just install a GPU in a motherboard socket instead of buying a bulky graphics card?

The better question is: can we slot a CPU in a PCI-E slot like a GPU?

I'm surprised the integrated motherboard GPU's we had in the late 2000's weren't mentioned.

I mean, PCIe is just.... a socket that everyone has agreed on using, as a standard.
It would be interesting to see maybe down the line once CXL is in wide use, the ability to allocate some of the CXL attached memory to a GPU.

"There are now 3 gpu manufacturers"
Allegedly. Intel GPUs are still unicorns

Yes I can put myself on a motherboard. 😏

SXM. Literally a socketed standard for GPUs.

As several comments have stated, this was actually a rather doable solution in the past. We have seen integrated gpus in mobos, albeit in the low-end integrated machines before igpus. Very similar to something my very old laptop used to run on, but on desktop format. Surprised this was not mentioned in the video. Besides that, the video still holds true to the facts that the integrated solutions did, do not and probably will not meet the high performace standards that one might expect from a dedicated gpu.

Look at some mainframes.
Power delivery can be slotted, GPU can get a slot, and vram can get a slot, each.
Think of the ewaste reduction, and get the exact combination of specs you want.

I feel like the discussion should have been made at the beginning where older motherboards, from the AT era, had graphics and video processors built into the board itself, sometimes even having expandable cache or having expandable memory

This was being phased out during the age of AGP, but you can also find some motherboards as late as PCIe that support onboard graphics.

Well, many CPUs now come with a GPU in them, so we do put GPUs on the motherboards.

So I think the solution is to make the GPU Motherboard itself a seperate piece, so that if the GPU Motherboard (Whatever Acer/Gigabyte builds) dies, you can replace that differently & if the GPU Chip itself (The one that's manufactured by Nvidia) dies, you could replace that differently.. This would also mean that you could potentially increase VRAM in future by swapping out the GPU from a 1060 3GB motherboard and putting it in a 6GB 1060 motherboard..

The old nForce chipsets were basically a GeForce chip and thus provided the onboard graphics.

I would actually like to have the ability to get "High end" APUs!

Thanks, Linus, for specifying desktop motherboards at the end. Laptop motherboards are an obvious exception.

In the early days of the PC-8086/XT, you could buy an expansion ISA card that contained a full motherboard with CPU, RAM, BIOS, etc. It would plug into an ISA slot and would use the slot to talk to the remaining I/O cards like the GPU, I/O, and disk controllers. This would allow a 4.77MHz PC to be upgraded to a 286 or 386sx CPU.

Thank you for filming and uploading in 4K

Am I the only one that remembers nForce chipsets with integrated graphics? They sucked bigtime (from a performance standpoint), but they were GPUs on the mainboard (well, the chipset to be precise) that were powered on the board and hat "sloted VRAM" (they used the regular system memory, much like modwrn IGPUs/APUs).

Opened up my laptop the other to slot in more ram, and lo and behold the GPU is directly soldered to the board. It shares the heatsink with the CPU.

I'm pretty sure my old AM2 Sempron build had an GPU on the MOBO. Those CPUs had no iGPU and there wasn't a single expansion card in it.

it would be cool to see a company doing it to a really old mother board with just ISA slots
