How I've Learned to Sew

Sewing consistently for the last several years, I've been developing a way in which I create and sew.

It's about breaking down a project into a series of smaller steps that are manageable to attempt. All of these steps are bundled into iterations and after several improvements in each iteration, I've ideally figured out exactly how to make the final project. Lastly, there's always a few tiny details that I go back in and fix because, well, I want to impress myself.

as a programmer it's very interesting to hear the way you break down the sewing problem as if it was a programming problem

As someone that likes to rush through my sewing projects, this is a great reminder to stay mindful and patient.

I loved this video! As stupid as it may sound, it never ocurred to me to build a smaller version of a garment just to experiment and get the perfect fit while saving fabric. Especially because for me is really important that my trousers are the perfect fit and make my cupcakes look really nice.
What you say in step 2 is actually a great mindset and a really good piece of advice. Your channel is golden.

Corn, I might have told you, my Mum was a skilled seamstress who worked in a Tailors also, never bought a pattern. If only I'd inherited her skills 🙄.
One thing she did, (never saw her fitting clients, that was done in her out of bounds sewing room) put garment on me inside out to make any adjustments did using long stitch, tried right way out. Wonderful at figuring out problems, just like you, aaah.. 😁

Thanks for showing us that it takes a lot of work, mostly trial and error, before we get the desried result.
I crochet, among the things I do, and I have ripped out more stitches than I can count. While crochet doesn't leave pinholes, it still adds to the frustration factor when one can't understand a pattern or copy a design.
Thanks again for what you teach us.

Thank you for this video. I recently brought fabric to make a formal pants for my husband. (I've never made adult pants in my 10years of sewing) I downloaded a pattern and printed it but just looking at it makes me feel like it wont fit.😂 Your advice in this video has given me hope that in trial and error, I'll be able to tweek the pattern and make it fit. Also your video on pants pattern drafting has also encourage me to attempt to draft one from scratch. So thanks 😊

Awesome breakdown and presentation as usual, and looks like the trousers are gonna be spot on!

I don't sew. I don't have the slightest clue as to how to set up even the most basic sewing machine. I don't foresee myself ever "getting into" sewing. All that to say, I love your videos. I bet I could watch you make a 4-hour video on hemming socks, and still be completely drawn in! LoL.

And, take time to gather your supplies: sourcing a nice roll of craft paper, or tape and newspaper, or donated rolls of wrapping paper from the thrift store is something we don’t think to do, but should. Speaking from experience.
Wonderful content and extremely helpful. Thank you.

I so admire all of my sewing friends who make muslins. I see with my eyes the difference it makes yet still I’m part of the muslin/toile resistance. 😂. On a side note, thought about you as I watched the most beautiful documentary. Free on Prime: Men of The Cloth. Talk about tailoring!

Thank you for this very informative and encouraging video. I have watched it many times just for the encouragement I need to go through this rather tough journey of sewing.

I've just found your videos and I like your style, Corn! I love your analogy to coding, reminds me that (in my capacity as a coder) I should be taking its lessons to heart elsewhere in my life! Good reminder to me (in my capacity as a seamstress) to be patient haha

I just discovered your channel last night, or should I say early this morning! I've been sewing since I was 11 years old, back when fabric was inexpensive, (I'm lots older now), and always wanted to make my own patterns. Thank you for offering classes on this subject. Can't wait to try it! And, thanks for sharing your story, you are amazing. How old is you sewing machine?

Everything looks so easy when you are doing the cutting, marking measuring. I just tried to draw a straight line on a piece fabric. Tailor’s chalk pulled, distorted and wasn’t the easy connecting the dots.

As someone who loves to just wing it every time I do something I've found that ironing and pressing makes me slow down and think about the steps. I've yet to take on a pants project though, so I'm assuming it will require a bunch more planning and iterating.
