I got a wooden table with drawers exclusively to keep my sewing machine and all the other stuff like needles, threads etc.I make sure that I am in a very good mood with no additional house work to do the day I plan to work on a project. I am a beginner ...my greatest regret is that my mentor, an excellent seamstress died of cancer... now I learn from people like you on YouTube. Thanks for all your inspiring videos.

I inherited my sewing machine from a friend who used it once and hated the process. I started out making simple drawstring bags. Worked my way up to tote bags made from old pants and shirts. Continued the bag journey by making small back packs from upcylced clothing and even an old dog bed. The bug hit and I have made curtains, slipcovers, pillow cases and finally have been reconstructing clothing in my closet to have one-of-a-kind appeal- and now have friends and family coming to me to help alter and fix clothing. Love your channel!

Videos like yours on YouTube have changed the way we learn to do things. Have to 100% agree with your tips on learning how to sew. When I taught my daughter to sew, the first thing she sewed was a simple shoulder bag. She then repaired a hem on a skirt, then altered a dress by taking in the seams, to make an op shop dress fit her better. She was no inclination at present to sew a garment from a pattern, but she can do simple mending jobs. The other day, she had to make a dragon tail for a school project, so she raided my fabric stash, and sewed up a dragon tail from scratch, with minimal help from me. He students were blown away when she took the tail to school. You don't know what you can achieve until you try. Happy sewing.

My favourite type of sewing is upcycling and refashioning. I love that shirt you have in the background ... beautifully done. I was upcycling before there was even a word for it. My kids were wearing underpants made from our old t-shirts, dresses and pants made from my husband's old suits, etc. Whenever people would ask where we got our clothes and I'd tell them, they'd sometimes even say, "Oh ...I'm so sorry". As if we were poor and it was done out of neediness, lol. Now thrifting, upcycling and re-fashioning and are trendy. I was so ahead of my time :).

My mother sewed for 5 daughters! I was the only one who was interested. I started by helping her with buttons, hems, and mending. Then I took sewing in school, starting fairly young. I would have to bring my project home and she would look at it. If I did something wrong, I had to redo it. At the time, I hated that, but it was really helpful. I wound up taking sewing in school every year. Your advice is spot on! Start with simple projects that interest you, master that project, try something more complicated, and keep building on your skills. Zippers can be intimidating for new sewers. Pick up a couple of short zippers at the fabric store, practice stitching them on some small pieces of fabric. That way, when you go to create a garment with a zipper, you'll feel much more confident in your ability to put it in. I've been sewing for many years and I will still do samples of new techniques that I run across or techniques that I haven't done in awhile. Yes, when I'm not pleased with how something looks, I'll redo it (thanks Mom!). Evelyn, I only recently found your channel and it's quickly become one of my favorites.

I kind of skipped all of the steps and went straight to patterns. It was a "learn how to sew" pattern but I still remember feeling so overwhelmed. Then my very next project was sewing a satiny regency style costume. It turned of horribly and I got so frustrated that I didn't sew again for several months. My break through was setting up a corner of my bedroom with all of my sewing supplies so I saw it and it made me want to learn because it was right in my face. That small corner has now taken up most of my bedroom now with the ironing board, sewing machine, bookshelf with all of my patterns, notions, and fabrics and now with the recent addition of a dress form. Once I got serious about it I just got a circle skirt pattern and sewed it four different times and each time got easier and better. I also obsessively watch how to sew videos. I have found I have made the most progress since I have decided to not get caught up in finishing things if I am frustrated with it. I will put it aside and work on something new it keeps it fresh and fun.

I am 18 years old and I just began sewing. Unfortunately for me I don't have the luxury to pay to learn, and also there are not so many sewers in my country that they are giving lessons... So I am learning from the internet... For most. And from my mistakes!😅 I hope that's just fine.😅

I'm still a beginner but I found the easiest thing was to buy a book for beginners and work from the patterns in there. If I get stuck I pick the brains of the women in the fabric shop! I would definitely recommend making the garments with cheaper fabric first to lower the stakes.

When i was around ten, my grandma started sewing with me kind of on and off, little quilts and simple skirts...it wasn't really thorough /teaching/ so much as "do this, now do this, this, and this", but we made some nice things. She died in 2016, leaving a massive sewing stash to me and my mother. It's only this year i've begun to look through everything. I've found a great many things she'd started working on, so my real intro to learning to sew has been my attempts to finish her projects! So far i've sewn the binding on a few quilts, and have almost finished hand-stitching a little quilt top...my biggest goal is to work my way into historical apparel sewing.

I’m 62 (still feeling like 32!) and made most of my clothes in junior and senior high school, back in the 1970s. My 7th grade home economics class included cooking a tuna noodle casserole and sewing a Simplicity pattern olive green jumper. I’ve still got the 1957 Singer machine from those days but haven’t used it in quite awhile. I love watching your videos. They are excellently done! Besides the significant expertise you bring to all your presentations, your bright and cheerful personality is contagious and has gotten me thinking about opening up the lovely old machine to see what I might still create with her. Thank you for your great videos and for sharing your passion for sewing and vintage design with us.
