How to build a base in DayZ:
Spend 3 days gathering the stuff.
Find your spot.
Build your wall.
Realise you need pliers to make a gate.
Unbuild your wall.
Spend another week looking for pliers.
Finally get them.
Back to your base.
Try to rebuild your wall but realise it didn't give you all the stuff back when you unbuilt it.
Spend another 2 days looking for more nails.
Need more planks.
Your saw breaks because in your 300 hours of game time you've never even seen a sharpening stone.
Give up.
Go to bed.
Come back next day, get killed, go back to bed.

holly this is by far the most noob, week 1 base building video i seen. I mean that in all the good ways possible.

Couple things I don't think I heard mentioned that are worth noting:
Any task that requires a hammer, can also be completed with a hatchet, I find hatchets more ideal than hammers because they can easily be repaired with a sharpening stone.
Hacksaws take less durability loss than Handsaws when harvesting plank piles, while Handsaws take less durability loss than Hacksaws when harvesting planks from logs.
The pickaxe can be repaired with a sharpening stone.

Pickaxes are repairable with a sharpening stone. A 100% pristine one can harvest 16 large stones before ruining, same with the sledgehammer.

Since a pickaxe can be repaired 4 times with a sharpening stone and each repair can allow it to mine 6 more stones if done most efficiently, a single worn pickaxe and a sharpening stone can be enough to get all 32 stones for a flagpole.

The best part is that matter where it's located or the number of walls, it will be raided very quickly.

I play on community servers and the only base that lasted more than a few weeks was a 15+ wall base on prison island. Good luck!
