The thing that really interests me is that the setting of the movie is actually really close to where lovecraft said Cthulhu surfaced

This scene legit sends chills down my spine, say what you want about the movie, but damn if that isn't a badass way to introduce the Ancient One to live film!

She shooting the flare kinda reminded me of a scene in Godzilla (2017) when the troops shot a red flare to godzilla in Hawaii during the tsunami, thus godzilla appeared clearer in front of civilians on the roof.

The idea of Cthulhu invoking “madness at first sight” could THEORETICALLY still hold. Think about it: the two survivors didn’t actually see the creature, and the main girl chose to die rather than make it out when given the chance, after having seen it.

I know I’m stretching it, but it’s still some entertaining food for thought.

This movie is the definition of why I'm terrified of going deep underwater.

Every now and then you watch a movie scene that genuinely shocks you, and seeing the Cthulhu rise up in this scene was one of them for me. The thing is just so beyond what one would imagine is in the oceans. Large animals exist, and incredibly large animals have been known to exist in history, but the size of this thing is just terrifying. You have discovered a type of animal that shouldn't exist at the bottom of the ocean. Plus the score when you see the size for the first time. A genuinely creepy, lovecraftesque scene

I really love how well this movie blends in elements of thalassophobia. Like I don't have that fear too bad but this is definitely what I can imagine a lot of people with that fear think of when they see the dark parts of the ocean.

I haven’t seen the whole movie, but this has gotta be one of the most horrifying situations in movie history. She’s trapped a thousand feet underwater in the dark, totally alone (except for the other two), and now she’s face-to-face with a gigantic beast. And not just any beast-Cthulhu
