Floyd is expanding its Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs to Polk Medical Center to better serve patients in Cedartown, Rockmart, Aragon and surrounding areas.

Cardiac Rehabilitation and Pulmonary Rehabilitation are medically supervised programs designed to help patients recovering from a heart attack, heart surgery or with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) gain strength and confidence to return to an active lifestyle and to better manage their heart and lung health.

While cardiac rehabilitation has been available in the Rome community for several years, Floyd is the first organization to provide pulmonary rehab in northwest Georgia.

A team of specially trained professionals is assigned to a patient and customizes a program which can include the following:
-Comprehensive medical evaluation
-Physical conditioning
-Education and disease management
-Learning to exercise safely at home
-Nutrition counseling
-Counseling to help address the disease-related fear and anxiety

Participation in the rehabilitation programs requires a physician referral, and is covered by most insurance providers, Medicaid and Medicare. The new services are being provided at 118 E. Girard Ave. Appointment hours are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Patients wishing to schedule an appointment for either cardiac rehabilitation or pulmonary rehabilitation should call 706.509.6040.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation can reduce a patient's symptoms, reduce chances of having other health-related issues, improve energy and help a patient return to an active lifestyle, according to program directors Lee Clevenger and Jeff Thompson. In addition, patients learn to develop healthy behaviors and to better manage their disease, reducing their dependence on costly medical resources.
