Sarin (GB) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless liquid that is one of the most toxic chemical warfare agents known. It is a member of the G-series nerve agents, which were developed by Germany during World War II. Sarin is a highly potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which means that it blocks the action of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in muscle contraction and other essential functions. When acetylcholinesterase is blocked, acetylcholine builds up in the body, leading to a variety of symptoms, including:

Miosis (pinpoint pupils)
Salivation
Sweating
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Muscle twitching
Convulsions
Respiratory failure
Death
Death from sarin poisoning can occur within minutes of exposure. Even if a person survives the initial exposure, they may suffer permanent neurological damage.

Sarin can be released as a liquid or a gas. It can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin. Sarin is also highly flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air.

Sarin has been used in a number of terrorist attacks and military conflicts. In 1995, the Aum Shinrikyo cult released sarin in the Tokyo subway system, killing 12 people and injuring thousands more. Sarin was also used in the Syrian Civil War, with the Syrian government and rebel groups both accused of using the agent.
