Zero times infinity is undefined because we can’t do conventional arithmetic with infinity.

Here’s what I mean: let’s say we multiplied a function whose limit is infinity with a function whose limit is zero. In this case, the limit of the function is infinity. But if we multiply a different function whose limit is infinity with a different function whose limit is 0, the limit of our product is now zero.

By altering the functions that we work with, we can get any answer to this problem ranging from 0 to infinity. That is why zero times infinity is undefined.

I originally published this video concept last year, but I've re-made it because some commenters correctly pointed out that my first video's explanation left much to be desired. Link to the original is in the description.

Hope you enjoy this more accurate version!

Officially, we tend to reserve the term "undefined" for a limit that approaches infinity--such as the slope of a vertical line. The term for zero times infinity (and similar limits) is "indeterminate, " because it has yet to be determined.

Excellent. This is so well explained. And note that it isn't fast, it is brief. I love the examples used in this video.

Why even use limits to explain ∞*0? We are talking about EXACTLY 0, NOT approaching 0. ∞*0 is 0.

So it's kind of the same thing as an unstoppable force and an immovable object

any number /0=infinity, so 0×Infinity = any number...thats it...😅😊

I’ll define it for everyone 0*infinity=1
It’s literally the equation for creating a multiverse, you take an infinite nothing we represent in math as 0 and in English as the void and mix it with infinite something which can be represented as the existence of god and the * represents the action of him mixing the two to get existence which we represent as 1. As we can’t interact with infinite or zero so we would represent the sum from our perspective as one even though we can know that it’s actually more like infinite 1s although from a gods perspective there would be infinite answers all being 1 though so maybe something like ♾️*0=1 ^♾️ it’s quite simple to understand this kind of math when you put yourself in the perspective of a god creating a universe. Which is the only place ♾️ truely exist is the points of interactions where the infinite poors into the nothinging this is a big bang the start of our waves, and the end of them being black holes where the something meets the nothing being two undescribable shapes meeting each other explains why we can’t say what the actual shape of the smallest or biggest parts of our universe are because their literally nothing and infinite both two concepts we can’t comprehend because we can’t have one without the other because that’s what existence is

0 is 0. it is nothing. it is like adding nothing to nothing infinity times, it will still be nothing. you cant create something by multiplying infinity times.

Any number multiplied by zero is always zero, this completely breaks logic and mathematics. For example, if 1/0 = ∞, why ∞ × 0 ≠ 1? isn't this inconsistent with the inverse in any division or multiplication?

Zero times Infinity equals 1. Here, I will prove it. Any number, x, divided by any number, y multiplied by it's inverse equals one. Therefore (x/y) x (y/x) = 1. But if you set x= 0, then you have, 0/y = 0 and it's inverse, y/0= infinity. Therefore, 0 x ♾️ = 1

I think the video is misleading. Exactly zero times infinity should be zero. (for example, zero plus zero plus zero.... indefinitely should be zero). The key here is something approaches zero (but not exactly zero) times something approaching infinity is indeterminate (that is it can be 0, infinity or some other value). I would greatly appreciate if you can point out where my reasoning is wrong. At least I have been teaching this in my college calculus class the past 30 years.

its 0 because you are just adding 0 endlessly and because of that you will always end up with 0

If zero represents nothing and nothing is defined as a void, then the void is in fact infinite.

This has got to be one of the most idiotic mathematical explanations I've ever heard. Of course infinity times zero is zero. Claiming that infinity is "undefined" and therefore the answer to this equation is undefined is silly. It's like you've taken on the intelligence of a cheap calculator. Zero times "anything" is zero.
