The US department for energy has announced that it has made a 'major scientific breakthrough' in the race to recreate nuclear fusion.

At a press conference on Tuesday US energy secretary, Jennifer Granholm, said scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California 'achieved fusion ignition', which is 'creating more energy from fusion reactions than the energy used to start the process.' Describing the experiments results as a 'BFD' [Big Fucking Deal], she added that 'this milestone moves us one significant step closer to the possibility of zero carbon abundant fusion energy powering our society'.

This is the most important milestone in human history. How does this not have millions of views yet?!

Bravo, but she should have mentioned that the beauty of fusion energy is that there is literally zero possibility of melt down because if any of the control parameters are removed from the ignition, the reaction simply stops. And that there is no radioactive waste. It's a dramatic step forward, but there are still significant hurdles before a fusion reactor which provides energy for a large population, is realized. It's an exciting development for the future of the planet!

This is biggest news of possibly all time. Amazing! As far as I remember it was said we're still at least decades before such breakthrough. I believe it will be used commercially much faster than previously expected. Well done USA ❤️

People might look back at this 100 years from now and see this as the beginning

Weird how this is not getting enough recognition, it's HUGE news since this actually means that we will have fusion energy plants within 30 years, it's no longer a joke. We have finally created sustainable energy. Easily the best news of 2022

this is MASSIVE. Unironically one of the biggest steps humanity has ever made. Possibly comparable to creating electricity? This is huge. I feel like we're in science fiction

It’s really cool I get to witness such a breakthrough in my lifetime.

This is, single-handedly, the start of our future.

Don't get too excited.

They like to talk about Qplasma but not about Qtotal. QPlasma is the energy striking the fuel divided by the energy output by the fuel. QTotal is the total energy consumed by the power plant divided by the total energy produced by the power plant. Although this experiment demonstrated a positive Qplasma (3.15 MJ / 2.05 MJ > 1), it still took about 300 MJ from the grid to fire the laser.

Well done people in the US. You can be proud ! All the best from Germany

If this event truly holds up to its promise, our successors will likely cringe at how her speech placed „nuclear deterrent“ before „clean source of energy“. Humanity never learns.

What a time to be alive! We saw fusion when it started! Hundreds of years from now when people are flying between planets, they will look back on this moment as one, if not the most significant discovery of our time! I love it

I'm glad to live in a time like this, just the perfect time to see so much happen (literally can look up footage from the 1950s and ideologies along with it along with milestones just as these). Anyone alive in the present can see how much our culture has changed for the better and that'll hopefully be the same for generations to come.

I'm excited to see what new things we'll see in the future with this technology and how much it'll impact us.

I'm in awe of how a scientists said they were decades away from fusion and they made that happen in less than a year of saying that

It is genuinely amazing, I just worry that as all of these incredible new technologies converge across disciples like machine learning and clean energy, that our institutions and our infrastructure are poorly equipped to deal with the change that is coming, and that change is going to be far bigger than anyone is currently preparing for.

She went with nuclear deterrent first... What a time to be alive...

Just my 2 cents: another advantage of nuclear fusion is that the material source is abundant. In this case hydrogen . We will never run out of it as is the case of gasoline
