Crazy to think about how moments like this will be taught in history 50 years from now

Funny how I was just watching your video about fusion then another then this news comes out haha.

Let’s relax a moment here. The reaction was only 1% efficient

So exciting to know that because of this news fusion is only 20 years away!

On the over all project they still consume tons of energy more than what they create, we are still decades behind

Sadly the energy input needed for the lasers was waaayyy more than they took out of it. We are stil not seeing fusion energy any time soon. But are definitely one step closer.

Fusion is only 10 years away. And always will be.

Actually they didn't make more energy than what they spent. To heat up the fuel they use lasers that are highly inefficient, so less than 1% of the energy consumed reaches the fuel. If we consider just the energy that reached the core the process produced more energy than what it recieved, but if we factor in the energy the lasers spent to heat the core we're still far from getting positive. Also there still are all the problems that lead researchers to aim at the technology behind ITER and not this one, we still are really far from actually being able to deploy fusion power plants on scale. It still is a really big achievement tho, congratulations to the researchers.

Finally something to save us all, hope we can make smaller cheaper ones eventually that are as efficient.

Important context missing from this report: It took many times as much energy to run the lasers than they put into the reaction.

Maybe you can make a video about the proposed Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel

Great video. Just the other week Fred was talking about the Swedish efforts to produce steel economically which is part of our UK energy and industrial strategy! These efforts could be outdone with the holy grail that Fred the shred talks about!

I cannot believe how little coverage this has gotten. THIS IS CLEAN ENERGY.

Still 20 years away. If big energy companies have anything to say about it this will never happen.

This story has been so overblown. We are still nowhere close to nuclear fusion as a power source.

The ITER in France is a different type of reactor which generates a stream of plasma around the inside of a huge electromagnetic torus (donut shape). The National Ignition Facility (NIF) that broke net energy output uses arrays of high powered and amplified lasers to compress fuel pellets so fast they ignite into plasma. (We actually saw the NIF reactor in Star Trek Into Darkness as the Enterprise’s warp core.)

Tony Stark built his in a cave! With a box of scraps!

I'll wait to be excited until it's duplicated. I hope it's true.

Energy is neither created, nor destroyed. It is only transformed.
