Oh No, Not My Baby MAXINE BROWN

UK listeners will be more familiar with Manfred Mann's version of this 1964 Goffin and King song. But here's the original US version and there's quite a story behind it. It was first recorded by The Shirelles, who made the mistake of alternating lead vocals between each member of the group. The result was that the original Carole King melody got lost and a dissatisfied recording executive handed the recording to Maxine Brown. She listened to the recording, trying to make out the original melody ... but it was a group of kids playing outside who picked out the melody and began singing it. Subsequently, her vocals were overdubbed onto the original Shirelles' backing.
