Forgive my ignorance, but shouldn't you first check for a pulse before starting compressions? For a person who's heart is still beating, it is my understanding that you could in fact stop their heart by initiating compressions. I know there's been a push in recent years teach the "lay person" the straight-to-compression methods. I don't agree with it.
