Jon Stewart on President-elect Trump, hypocrisy in America

After Jon Stewart left "The Daily Show" last summer, much of the presidential campaign went on without his unique and satirical point of view. Charlie Rose met with Stewart to discuss his new book about the more than 16 years he spent at the Comedy Central program. Stewart was quick to give his post-election analysis.

Never liked him, he has said horrible things about what I believe in. Not sure how to take what he has said here. I am sick of being called racist, bigoted, homophobic, Islamophobic etc. I am tired of being hated because I am a conservative republican. No one stands up for me and you want me to accept you? How does that work liberal?

Seriously, Jon Stewart just gets it. I would vote so hard for that guy if he ever ran for president...

Jon Stewart at many times could have grabbed onto the bait that was being thrown out at him. I respect that dude so much for stating his own thoughts and never going for the low hanging fruit.

"We have a tendency to grant amnesty to people that we agree with and to overly demonize people we don‘t."

- Jon Stewart, on the Rachel Maddow Show 11/19/10

I miss him.

and this is why i hold Jon Stewart in higher respect than Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, or John Oliver*. while those three are pulling their hair out wondering what went wrong, Jon at least tries to look at the situation realistically.

i mean, to be honest: this is the man who taught us to always be on the alert for bullshit.

*note: i do still respect these three as humorous intellectuals, i just have hang-ups with each one.

Jon Stewart has always had that logical voice sense. He sees the whole picture of things because he isn't an idiot.

I really like Jon's optimism and sound reasoning. It is June 2020, and I have none of those things left.

The biggest facepalm is that out of 300 million ppl USA couldn't bring forth better presidential candidates.

I can appreciate what Jon says about his buddies who voted for Trump. Just because you voted for Trump doesn't make you racist misogynist xenophobe. But it DOES mean that those things aren't a dealbreaker for you in your president.

Yeah America isn't fundamentally a different country with all its grace, flaws, volatility, insecurity, strength, & resilience, but Trump did bring to the surface all the negative things which were buried deep in the collective subconscious mind of White working-class America.

This is a brilliant interview. I think I'll be coming back to it for years to come whenever I feel frustrated with the state of the country.

Whether I agree with him or not, at least he can make a coherent and intelligent point.

Everyone who voted for Trump is not a racist. BUT they proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that being a racist wasn't a deal breaker as far as who they threw their weight behind.

And that shit is depressing.
