How many suits should I own? It's a question I get ALL the time. And it's a great question. Like many menswear-related questions, there is no definitive answer or exact science to determining how many suits you really need. However, a good suit is one of those menswear and men's style essentials that you should have no matter who you are. In an attempt to answer the "how many suits should I own" question, I've created four categories of men--all the way from the guy who never wears a suit to the guy who loves suits and likes to dress dapper. See below.

0:00 - How Many Suits Do You Need?
0:59 - The Guy Who Never Wears A Suit
1:58 - The Occasional Suit Wearer
3:15 - Blinkist Ad
4:51 - The Guy Who Wears A Suit To Work
6:51 - The Men’s Style Fanatic
7:59 - Wrap Up

For each of these types of guys, I've determined the number of suits he should own as well as suggested styling details for things like suit jacket lapels, suit pocket style, number of buttons, vents and so on. It doesn't matter whether they're off the rack suits, made to measure suits, custom suits, or bespoke suits--buy the best suits you can to match your lifestyle and your budget.

"Its not about you" I wish people took that more seriously. I'm 29 and I wished the tradition of wearing suits in professional environments came back.

its been said by someone else, but ill echo that “its not about you” is a great quote. Tom Ford says that dressing well is a form of good manners, after all!

The answer is easy: "just one more" 🤣

Could you do a video on a "James Bond" themed wardrobe? from the suits to the casual?

I really needed this list here. I'm a young guy who doesn't own a single suit, but as I've gotten older the thought of having a suit has been consistently getting heavier on my mind. The problem is that I didn't know where to start. THIS video has been a HUGE stress reliever, as I now have a clear starting point. Thanks, man!

I agree with most of this advice. I'd say it's also geographically specific. I'm in a part of the US that is super casual. Like, a collared shirt and dark denim is "dressy" here. When selling suits to clients, I usually recommend charcoal and navy as the first 2 suits anyone should own. You nailed it with this video!

NOTE: Good advice my friend. I have a collection of 50 different custom 2 & 3 piece suits. (from sheer to Tweed). So after my first 4 suits, everything else is vintage by decade (from 1920 to 2010). Also buy suits that fit your climate. I live/work in Houston. Usually 90+ Degree temp. So I only have 1 Tweed suit (LOL!) the rest are VERY light materials. CHEERS!

Great point about feeling better. I get treated differently when I wear a suit. Maybe it's my attitude that changes. (I have a good attitude naturally) but I think wearing a suit makes me feel a bit more together and that comes across.

Wool is the miracle fabric; it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Wool drapes far better than any other fabric.

Hey Brian, I love the presentation here and the advice that you just gave. Though this comment is pretty late after you post this video, I want to say that this advice is truly helpful for me. Because you don't generalize people and instead you divide them into different categories.

I'm a 24 year old guy who just starting to enter workforce and although my workplace does not require suit, but I would love to dress up nicely every now and then. So I'm in occasionaly suit wearer category. I only have black suit since suit culture is not very booming and necessary in my country, but now I'm considering to get navy & charcoal gray suits.

This comment is pretty long, but when you read it I hope I can convey my message that this video is immensely helpful and you just gained a new subscriber. 😊

I really enjoyed this video and thought your numbers all made perfect sense, as did the types of suits you selected. When I had to wear suits to work, I had 10 in rotation but found that 7 was actually perfectly fine when taking into account dry cleaning. I do prefer to wear all light weight suits in summer and heavier wool types in fall and winter. As always, thanks for sharing your expertise and experience.

I am definitely Number 4 and if you looked into my closet, the sky is most certainly the limit where I am concerned. I have so many suits that a clerk at a business I frequent a great deal asked me, “Just how many suits DO YOU OWN?”

Just my two cents, but I would suggest the guys in the first two categories have a basic black suit, then maybe a grey or navy blue suit. Black goes with everything and appropriate for almost any occasion!

I love watching your video. I fall into the last group. The factor that limited the number of suits/sport coats I have is space

Great video, Brian! I absolutely agree with all of your choices and I am happy that I am in bracket no. 4, so I can buy as many suits as my bank account allows me to buy. ;)
