I completely agree! When I visited the less populated areas of Japan like Shiroishi, Koriyama, and Ashikaga, as soon as I spoke Japanese the locals in those areas immediately opened up to me because they recognized I was trying. There were many times where I said the wrong thing or had to repeat myself (or just speak slowly in general to gather my thoughts), but they were always patient with me and I could tell they really appreciated that I was trying to speak with them in Japanese as opposed to English. Even with my accent and beginner level understanding, my experiences with locals (and visiting Japan in general) was completely transformed when I made the effort to communicate regardless of my language abilities. Not only did it help me learn as I spoke with them, but it gave me the confidence to keep trying!☺️

I'm quite an anxious person so I needed to hear this. Thanks.

I think accents are awesome. I love hearing different accents from around the world. I've been studying Japanese for 4 years and I'm always self conscious of my own accent. But then I always try to remind myself how cool accents sound. As long as you can be understood, it's a beautiful thing.
That being said, I'm constantly working on my Japanese accent and never feel like it's good enough 😂
We give others a lot more grace than we give ourselves most of the time.

Best way I found to iron out an accent in my speaking: focus less on the words you're speaking and how they're spelled and basically try to parrot the sounds native speakers make.

I barely understand any spanish at all (mostly my fault because I wasn't a very engaged student at the time) but because I practiced at parroting the way spanish sounds, my teacher often pointed out that I sounded like a fellow countryman of his (he was an immigrant from Chile)

I think it's easy to get like a mental block when reading a foreign languaged and try to pronounce it. Reflexively we start applying pronounciation rules from our native language and the pronounciation gets all messed up. So that's why I took to parroting native speakers and it seemed to work.

Hope this can help someone working on their accents. 🙂

your english is good. I speak japanese but always listen musics, specially enka (i love it), videos and chat (internet and live). If i have a mistake in japanese, i say "setsumei shite kudasai"

So my nervousness comes from a sense that Japanese people find westerners tryna interact with them annoying. I get this vibe because on VR Chat most Japanese worlds have filters in place to remove non-Japanese speakers.

But because I know very little Japanese, I can't tell if that's true or not ;-;

Ok, but what if people don't want to talk to me?

Well, I partially agree, but when you've learned a bit of Japanese from Anime, even if you took some regular classes too, then you SHOULD be careful because you might accidentally use rude forms. E.g. if you use google translate for "ochitsuke" and "ochitsuite" the result is "calm down" both times, but if I remember correctly then the first one is an order, so it'll be sure to offend people.
