Interesting mix of genres last month Joe, good going. You devour books like I drink wine!

You read more in a month than I do in three! Keep it up!

Have you read the latest Peter F Hamilton book?

Pretty diverse mix here, Jo! I read Whose Body? about a month ago and already don't remember it. I was hoping for another Agatha Christie bhut was a little disappointed. I've meant to read The Godfather for a while now but not got round to it. And I buddy read Dying of the Light with Todd the Librarian a few years back and neither of us were particularly impressed, but to be fair I think it was his first book. I also bought my copy used online and it turned out to be signed!

I felt the same way about G. R. R. Martin. I read half of the first book in his Game of Thrones series about 10 years ago and DNF'd it due to how bleak it all was. Not at all my style! Btw, I was thinking - do you ever read romance novels? I kind of think they might work for you since they generally are really positive reads.

Yeah, most of George R. R. Martin books are gloomy. But I really love them all. If you feel like giving him another chance, I recommend Tuf Voyaging. It is a collection of 7 short stories. It's more light-hearted and fun than his other novels (although there's still a bit of gloominess, it's not THAT gloomy).
I understand that you find A Song of Ice and Fire too dark, but I always feel that hope is the bigger message in those novels. But to each their own :)
