you need to use the d pad on that menu. they designed it before the dual analog/dualshock.

disable the analog stick and use the arrow sticks as that’s a newer controller not meant for that console

the controller still works with the console but don’t expect analog sticks to work so disable the analog stick button so it isn’t red and then use the arrow keys

Unless that’s a Dual Shock compatible PlayStation, you gotta use the D-Pad my friend 😅

Damn... this makes me feel old. I still have mine from 1995 and it's still working. I got mine thanks to the deal they had in Toys R us where you trade in Sega Genesis and 10 games would get me a brand-new PlayStation.
Also, to give you hint on the issue, read up on what's the difference between Digital and Analog mode. I'll let you figure it out.

This could happen with a lot of old wired Playstation controller's. try and twist the wire from the top, but if that doesn't work then just try and find a new controller.

The controller port usually brekas because peopel tend to use third party controllees back in those days, it happened to me like a ton of times.

Have you tried the D-pad? The D-pad is the plus on your controller, it clicks up, left, down, right, I didn’t grow up in the PS1 era but I believe the joystick was only for moving in games, try using the D-pad! I love tech and computers a lot, I have some tech skills, if you got any more questions just make a video about the problem, I’ll help you out! And also, if my tip doesn’t work, try contacting the store for some help, anyway, respect for being a retro console/game fan! I am one as well!

There are 4 problems:
1. You cannot use the Analog Stick in the menu. You can only use the D-Pad
2. Wrong choice of music
3. This is the main menu.
4. Why is the PS1 in 16:9 aspect ratio?!?!!?!

Before watching this, my mom told me that not only she played the Master System when she was younger, but she also played ps1, and then we both wondered if she still had it somewhere, but we couldn't find it. I'm going to visit my nans in a week, not genuinely in search of the playstation, but we will try to find it if its there instead.

Try cleaning out the controller input and output with isopropyl 90% or maybe try blowing into it

To avoid this problem, restart 20 times and press dpad in the startup.
