How To Fix A PS1 | Freezing and Disc Read Error (Sony PlayStation One)

Sometimes just taking the disc reading housing off the three stabilisers and re-fitting it can fix a lot of problems

My PlayStation froze in the middle of a session of Road Rash (1995) and i turned it off, turned it back on again, to find that the laser had stopped working and the disc drive wasn't moving. i might try this out, im not sure, but thanks for the information on how to open up the Ps1 mate, it seems to be helpful.

WD40 is more a water repellent than a lubricant, so I mixed a bit of grease and 3 in one oil. Used screen cleaner to clean it. Was better but still jumping a little, so turned it upside down, tried a few times, worked ok, then right way up, worked ok. Awesome.
Now to finish Amazone, that I started about 20 years ago.

Looking forward to sorting my ps1 later today. The seemingly random stalls/screen freezes on mine are almost enough to bring about berserker rages. As it sometimes let's you play a level or two before crashing; either when you try to save or load the next level. It also sometimes simply does the menu thing like Mnsr. Wooden Owl described....
Good thing I'm not paranoid or i might start taking it personally.

Thank you sir, my ps1 had problems Reading disc. Wd 40 is fine it did Work 100% for me, now my ps1 Can read my disc’s now. Time to Play some of the good oldies again. :)

WD-40 ruins the electric motors, use sewing machine oil instead. And for the laser sled gears and the sled itself, mixture of lithium grease and sewing machine oil.

Late to the party but thanks for this. I'm getting constant read errors when playing star ocean but after oiling the mechanical parts of the disc reader that fixed it.

Not only is WD40 nonconductive but the WD stands for 'water displacement' so it'll actually drive water away from where you use it. However, it is NOT a lubricant (even tho it seems to work for that sometimes) and it may damage or degrade plastic components. Never used it on a PS1 (or any console) so I can't tell you it's safe or unsafe but it's something to be aware of.

My brother just got me a ps1 and it was having the skipping and load screen error issues you described. It played when I stand it on its left side or when I turn it over. It’s still a little glitchy. I’m going to try this method today and I bet it will fix everything. I’ll report back my findings

I have an issue where it’ll load the black background logo, move to an empty black screen, then stay there. Any idea what the issue is?
