Topgun F-14b Tomcat radar Explained! Carrier Defense role

Now that TopGun Maverick is out and the phoenix aim-54 has been (fixed, updated, nerfed, brokened, restored) you decide, what is the F-14 Tomcat for? Some history, not the Top Gun movie which left out some details, a documentary my secret hope for DCS... Question is, is the F14 still a viable PVP plane, let me know in the comments - but what I can say is that it is a great BVR interceptor with the Phoenix missile against TU-22 and TU-95 Russian/Soviet bombers. It also works great up close in a dogfight with Aim-9 sidewinders or the Aim-7. But where is its place?

Mixing actual documentaries and historical sources and footage with DCS and comparing them makes this very creative format so refreshing and sets it apart from other DCS related channels. I love it. Very well done!

I haven't played this game, but it was capable of hitting maneuvering fighter sized targets. "Wahoo", the RIO interviewed on the podcast, served from the late 70s to early 80s when the Navy did not want to use expensive AIM-54As on cheap MiG-21s. So during that time they didn't really train to use AIM-54s for fighter vs fighter engagements. As threat aircraft became more BVR capable, the Navy changed that attitude. I think "Bio" talks about that transition in one of his interviews when he mentions AIM-54s being carried regularly to counter the newer threats starting in the mid to late 80s. And The AIM-54C, introduced in 1986, improved the Phoenix to be better at destroying tactical aircraft and cruise missiles. There are lots of references detailing that I believe.

Even the AIM-54A was tested against maneuvering targets during its trials in the 70s. A book on the F-14 by Mike Spick published in 1985, "Modern Fighting Aircraft, Volume 8", details several "maneuvering target trials". "In one of a number involving violently manoeuvring targets, a QF-86 drone pulled a 6g turn just four seconds after the Phoenix had been launched to try and break the radar lock. After 174deg of turn, the missile caught up with it." In another trial detailed in the book, a QF-86 drone performed a 5g vertical dive from 15, 300 ft followed by a 6g roll out of the dive at 9, 100 ft after an AIM-54 was launched at it by an F-14 flying at 0.75 Mach, at 10, 000 ft, and from 9.5nm distance. The missile scored a lethal hit.

And, more importantly, in actual combat, reliable sources state the AIM-54 achieved 60 plus kills on fighters during the Iran-Iraq war. So, if this game wants to simulate reality, the AIM-54 was very capable of destroying fighters. Ok, done preaching.

At 9min50 I think you got a bit confused with what means multi-purpose in the 70's and an omnirole fighter of the 90's

"Once again we are talking about the Tomcat being a multi-purpose/multi-platform aircraft. Just like the F15 became later the F15e with its strike capability, the F14 already had it right away."

Multi-purpose:
The F14 was special because they use to be two diferrent aircraft needed for the missions of interception and air superiority (dogfights). But BOOM there she arrives in the 70's and she could do it all that's why she is called in a cold war era (post vietnam) mindset.

But the F15 could do the same when she arrived (also 70's but a bit later) she was designed as an interceptor and a dogfighter right away too. She was also multi-purpose in a cold war era (post vietnam) minset

Omnirole:

Omnirole is not just interception and dogfights it's also ground pound (SEAD, CAS...). And yes the F15 got strike capabilities with the F15e in the late 80's early 90's. The F15e being a true omnirole fighter as it's called in the 90's.
But the F14 got upgraded with good ground striking capability even later, if i remember correctly (Ward Carrol video) they had it for 1993 but didn't had them for desert storm (1991).

So yeah for me just a little confusion of what is a multi-purpose aircraft for the 70's and what is an omnirole aircraft for the 90's.

I think DCS is a Simulation and should be treated like one ... like no extra PVP MP Aim 54 breaks for me the direction DCS goes to... its how it should be now

In my opinion It is as should be, and must stay that way for PVE and PVP. If you have problems shooting down enemies in PVP apply new tacticts and have fun learning them, do not cry about why you don't have an OP platform. Why don't give the Mirage the Meteor missile then?, eventho the C version is not suppossed yo carry that.
