Sore throat is a common condition seen in clinical practice. Recurrent sore throat cab be caused by multiple factors, one of them being, chronic allergic pharyngitis. Allergic pharyngitis can manifest as soreness in the throat, itching and dry cough. Second commonest cause is condition being recurrent tonsillitis or recurrent pharyngitis. This is caused by both bacterial infection and viral infection. Bacterial infections are however more common. Tonsillitis manifest as a follicular tonsillitis as parenchymatic tonsillitis or a pseudomembranous tonsillitis. Any of this can cause recurrent episodes of sore throat giving rise to fever, cough and difficulty in swallowing. Post nasal drip caused by sinusitis is another cause of recurrent sore throat. Not to forget about the gastroesophageal reflux disorder, what is called as GERD. The reflux of acid from the stomach causes heart burn and chronic throat irritation. Sometimes aphthous ulcers or pharyngeal ulcers in the throat also can cause recurrent throat pain .Last but not the least even oropharyngeal thrush or candidiasis can cause recurrent throat irritation and pain in immunocompromised patients.
