A sore throat can cause pain, scratchy sensation, hoarseness, and a burning sensation. Acute throat infection caused by a virus or bacteria is the most common cause of a sore throat. Acute infections generally resolve within a few days without treatment and are not recurrent. Persistent sore throat, however, can be caused by allergies, postnasal drip, tonsillitis, pollution, etc. A sore throat can be easily diagnosed and treated. A doctor must be consulted in cases of severe pain in the throat, fever, or other acute symptoms. In case of bacterial infection, the doctor may prescribe medicines. In other cases, the ENT determines the treatment.
