HISTORY OF RUSSIAN BLUE CATS - FANNY CAT
The Russian blue cat, has an interesting history.
The Russian blue cat is a natural cat breed originating from the port of Arkhangelsk in Russia. This cat is also called the Arkhangelsk blue cat. It is believed that sailors adopted Russian blue cats from the Arkhangelsk Islands to England and Northern Europe in the 1860s. The Russian blue cat was first recorded participating in a cat contest outside Russia in 1875 at the Crystal Palace in England, under the name Arkhangelsk cat. Russian blue cats entered cat contests in a class that included all other blue cats until 1912, at which time they were given a class of their own.
The Russian blue cat breed was developed primarily in Russia and the Scandinavian countries until after World War II. Although Russian blue cats were in America before the war, it was not until after the war that cat breeders in America began to create the modern Russian blue cats seen in the United States today. This was done by combining the bloodlines of both Russian blue cats from Scandinavia and England. Unfortunately, for cat breeders, short fur with a gray or blue tint is often seen in Russian blue breeds which are mixed breeds.
The Russian blue cat is a short-haired cat with bluish-gray fur. This cat usually has green eyes. The Russian Blue cat has been used to a limited extent to create other cat breeds, such as the Havana Brown cat or to modify existing cat breeds, such as the Nebelung cat.
During the early 1970s, the Russian cat with a solid white pattern (called the Russian white cat breed) was created by Australian cat breeder Mavis Jones through crossing a Russian blue cat with a domestic white cat. In the late 1970s, the Russian white cat and the Russian black cat were accepted by cat breeders in Australia as well as in South Africa and now also in the UK as Russian cat breeds in different classes. However, in North America, the CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) does not recognize any of the variations of the Russian blue cat.
