Did people really list climate change as a reason for leaving Chicago? The city is about 600ft above sea level. It's not likely to be flooded out anytime in the next million years or so.

Climate change is the least of the worries in Chicago.

Decades of corruption and control by one political party takes its toll.

Coming from someone that was born and raised in Chicago. I will say the cost of living high crime rate, the job marketing, the taxes, and the climate are my reasons for leaving

High taxes, crime, corrupt politicians, bad educational institutions, nepotism, very political, hard living, terrible weather, cutthroat

Born and raised in Chicago. Left in 2015 due to corruption and piss poor politics. Not to add the crime and taxes, but they also played a role. I'll never return.

The reason urban america in general is taking a population hit is because there’s a collection of things that keep getting worse and worse and anyone who points it out get socially ostracized. People hate being gaslit. They’re being told it’s as good as it’s ever been when your eyes say life has steadily decayed for a few generations now. You’re supposed to act like the lawlessness doesent affect your daily life. At some point even the most city patriotic person gives up

I lived there for 9 years. Left in 2002 and I was very happy to do it. The corruption was pretty bad even then.

I think the home prices are also lower because the property taxes are so high … sure, a house is $350k, but the taxes on it can be $15k a year.

It seems that everybody is leaving all the major, big cities - not just Chicago.

Born and raised in Chicago. Then moved to the burbs. Then moved out of Illinois in 2022. Never regretted it once.
Between the crime, corruption and taxes as well as the weather that is why I cut out.

Tax base is shrinking. Better raise taxes to make up for it. I spent 57 years there. I left a year ago. Life is good.

Not everyone is leaving. Many are shot before they can get out.

I lived in Chicago for the last 38 years. I was born in the city and lived there until 2004 when I escaped to the suburbs just like you said; I left the avoid the bed schools and high cost of living. Last year, I found myself homeless. My lease was up and they raised my rent almost $700 a month to the “market rate.” I am 😊n a fixed income and I was forced to move. I couldn’t😢 afford even a studio in my home town, or anywhere in the city or suburbs. I lost everything and was forced to
Move in with a relative, a less than comfortable choice. Chicago rent are totally out of reach for most working people. My granddaughter pays over $2, 000 for a one bedroom with a small loft. She was forced to get a roommate to continue to stay. I don’t know how there could be so much poverty and they could afford housing. I’ve been on a section 8 waiting list for years.

I love Chicago. Born and raised in Illinois. Chicago was always great. Loved going there. Yes there is certain spots to avoid. Chicago is that bad. Illinois is the problem. And it's biggest issue is the politics. Illinois is the worst. Why I had to leave. The politics is Illinois is a big reason people leave.

I was born and raised in Chicago…. I realized I eas never going to get ahead and left 5 years ago.
High taxes, 1.5 hour commute to work work( one way), its expensive, and the ammenities no longer outweighed the negatives.
I remember the glory days of the taste of chicago and its a shell of what it once was.

Their government is a nightmare, that's the reason I've rejected recruiters looking to get me there.

If you lived in Chicago like I do and didn't listen to the media, you would think you live in the best city in the world. Great people, great culture, beautiful lakefront and architecture. There's always been crime in Chicago but if you're not a gangbanger or like walking alone drunk after midnight, you'll be fine.

The ONLY reasons I'm still living in one of the nicer Chicago suburbs are
1) Half my family is here, the other half in Europe
2) I'm part of a niche minority group that settled almost exclusively in Chicagoland when many fled Europe decades ago so there's nowhere else to go to be among the American flavor of my people and its culture
3) My job. If remote work starts rolling back I have the option of easily taking a train to the heart of the city where there are still jobs to be had in my field

Ill dip as soon as these three things no longer apply, especially the first two. And many, many around here say they stick around for similar reasons.
