Historical Hair Detangling Grew My Hair to Hip Length!

Historical hair detangling grew my hair to hip length - but it can be tricky and discouraging at times! In this video, I will take you along for a REAL look at what my hair typically looks like before I wash it (hint: a hot mess) and how I take it from looking like dry, matted straw to healthy, luscious, and moisturized. Not to mention free of tangles! This approach has evolved somewhat over my hair care journey, and I am always learning more as I go!

I have waist-length hair that is pin straight and extremely fine. I wash my loose/unbraided hair every three days and, while damp, finger-detangle from the midlength down and then repeat from the root down, using a leave-in conditioner with argan or jojoba oil from the midlengths down, and then a smoother with silicone (like Frizz-Ease) on the ends, only. Once it’s nearly dry, I brush it with a wet brush. If not treated with silicone, my ends get so dry and tangly between washings that it actually causes more damage than use of a clarifying treatment each month. I do not finger-comb my hair dry unless I have a tight tangle that needs to be unpicked—I just use a boar bristle brush because I feel like it puts less resistance on my hair. I really think braiding and wearing a silk bonnet or sleeping on a silk pillowcase is the key, along with (for my hair type) regularly trimming the ends blunt and treating them with a sealer, so that stray, thinner lengths don’t create knots in the first place.

Thank you for this. I was just stressing over my own waist-length, fine/frizzy hair being a tangled mess today after not washing for 5 days. This will inspire me to bite the bullet tonight and use some of your tips. My hair clumps/sticks together like velcro :)

Wow i can definitely see the difference from the beginning of the video to the end. You have such beautiful hair. It is definitely a labour of love to keep it that way ❤

The whole oiling the hair I also learned from a friend of mine, who is of African descent informed me that oiling the hair is a normal thing for her. She noted my dry hair and like you advised oiling the hair as I complianed of my straw & course hair to her.
I ve been trying and doing as you both advised and it's helped.
Another hair care I will soon try is a heat cap to hydrate my hair.

🌻Thank you Katherine for your commitment to help us keep/grow healthy hair. 🙋‍♀️Curly gal here, Catherine, & introduced you to my Catey (Catherine Lynn) who you're helping w hair-loss spots & dryness. She quit pony tails & went to braids all day when becoming a mom 10yrs ago. But 5 little ones later, still seeing results of tight ponys, on her sides. I have them too but in my 60's. Wondering if we get your formula, should we use it on those spots more often

My hair is stick straight and very fine.. I also shed what looks like a lot but 4ft of hair looks like a lot more than “normal” lengths

I save the shed hair and make them into extra hair pieces for updos and fancier styles

Simple hair piece is to wad it up and use it as padding to add volume without having to tease and damage your hair

Oh, also, I have cerebral palsy, and I am finding braiding my hair so beneficial for not only my hair but my hands ❤

I like to watch your video about long hair, it's as if I was taking care of mine while watching you. I am using part of your method: the rhassoul clay shampoo, and the finger detangling. But since my hair is curlier, I have stopped the oiling and detangling before washing, because it takes too much time and causes too many breakages. Plus, I need to do it all over again after washing anyway. I finger detangle my hair when I have the conditioner on, then when I am styling them with a foam and a gel. The rhassoul clay is awesome and the finger detangling way gentlier! Specially, since I learned through one of your video than when the hair is wet it is way more fragile. So, now I can feel how they are elastic because of the water, and am really gentle. You know what?! After having watched this video, I believe that what you need is someone to detangle and wash your hair once a week. Because in the ancient times, they probably had people who took care of their hair, specially since they were so long. What do you think of that? You probably like taking care of your own hair, as I do, but since you don't have much time and your routine is not easy, and your hair long and coarse, maybe you would need some help.

With wavy/curly hair daily maintenance by detangling and moisturizing is vital for length retention. My hair was kind of stuck at the bottom of the ribcage length until I started detangling with olive oil and regular moisturizing with water and sealing with shea butter or coconut oil. I use very heavy oils and butters but a pea sized amount and only on the very ends. I produce a lot of scalp sebum so I don't even bother oiling my scalp, I just apply olive oil to the top and middle of my hair before shampooing a couple times a month but I oil the ends like daily or whenever I feel the straw effect happening.

After watching your videos I started using the boar bristle hair brush and scalp hero...my aging (post menopausal at 57) hair is finally on the mend! Thank you! I have wavy to curly hair and it was starting to thin on the crown and now it's starting to thicken up again. I have dark brown hair and very light scalp so seeing the thinning areas really bothered me. This natural way is so much better for your hair health. I got my nieces (in their 30's) and a friend (in her 40's) to give it a try and I can't wait to hear how it helps them gain back a healthy head of hair.

interesting, I usually detangle after oiling my scalp and thanks to you I figured it sheds much less if I start with detangling then do scalp oiling.

❤your content. I’m 3c/4a but your journey is inspiring and a breath of fresh air as I am also a minimalist when it comes to my hair as well. And I make everything that I use myself. ❤❤

Hi Karherine, it's really nice with your kind of video: never rushed, always like visiting a friend and have a chat while doing hair or other things 😊
Because of your videos I startet using oils and a BBB in my fine curly hair (kind of chinlength for the longest hair). It helps me to go longer in between washing, but it pulls out way more hair than a comb or wood-bristles. Would love to have even length in my hair... But I don't, so I enjoy your hair and try my best with my own.
"for I am fearfully and wonderfully made" as psalm 139:15 says ❤

I just washed my hair for the first time in two years. I have a ver in very very dry scalp. The only reason I washed it when I did, was because it started getting too hard to detangle. I love your hair care regime. I’m going to try it. Don’t think I don’t care for my hair, because I do. Finger detangling is the best for my very long hair.
