Once you do the shading. Add a color mix node just before the color ramp. Add an attribute node with layer as the name. Plug it into a multiply node which is plugged into the Color mix nodes factor.
Plug different shader groups into the A & B of the color mix node. Adjust the Multiply nodes second number from 0 to 1 to mix the shaders.

In 4.0 do you think its possible to use the repeat zone to control how many layers of cables there are?
