Cochineal is a parasitic insect that generally lacks self-locomotion. What's interesting about them, is what happens when I crush them. They leave behind a lot of nice red powder because they have something in them called carminic acid. This is commonly used to make dyes for foods, and in things like lipstick.

For anyone wondering, they hang around on prickly pear cactus, they look like white cocoon things when they're alive and if you pick them off and crush them they dye your fingers red.

Fun fact: There was a native tribe near a mission that dyed their cloths and the missionaries wanted to know how so they watched them and noticed they used “seeds” so they took some and planted them expecting the plant to be able to dye clothes. The seeds were actually bugs the tribe crushed to make dye and the missionaries were just burying dead bugs
