Watch Bed Bugs Get Stopped in Their Tracks | Deep Look

At night, these parasites crawl onto your bed, bite you and suck your blood. Then they find a nearby hideout where they leave disgusting telltale signs. But these pests have an Achilles’ heel that stops them cold.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.

Adult bed bugs are about the size and color of an apple seed. After biting, they hide in a nearby cranny, like the seam of the mattress.

At the University of California, Irvine, biologist and engineer Catherine Loudon is working to create synthetic surfaces that could trap bed bugs. She was inspired by the tiny hooked hairs that grow from the leaves of some varieties of beans, such as kidney and green beans. In nature, these hairs, called trichomes, pierce through the feet of the aphids and leafhoppers that like to feed on the plants.

Researchers have found that these pointy hairs are just as effective against bed bugs, even though the bloodsucking parasites don’t feed on leaves. Loudon’s goal is to mimic a bean leaf’s mechanism to create an inexpensive, portable bed bug trap.

“You could imagine a strip that would act as a barrier that could be placed virtually anywhere: across the portal to a room, behind the headboard, on subway seats, an airplane,” Loudon said. “They have six legs, so that’s six opportunities to get trapped.”

--- Where do bed bugs come from?
Bed bugs don’t fly or jump or come in from the garden. They crawl very quickly and hide in travelers’ luggage. They also move around on secondhand furniture, or from apartment to apartment.

--- How can I avoid bringing bed bugs home?
“It would probably be a prudent thing to do a quick bed check if you’re sleeping in a strange bed,” said Potter. His recommendation goes for hotel rooms, as well as dorms and summer camp bunk beds. He suggests pulling back the sheet at the head of the bed and checking the seams on the top and bottom of the mattress and the box spring.

I'll be 70 soon. I grew up with these. She say's you won't even feel them. Once the infestation reaches a certain level there's just too many of them and it will wake you. Imagine being a kid and waking up to the bites and the itch. Imagine seeing them on you and the mattress. It really freaks you out and exhausts you trying not to sleep for fear of them. It effects your whole life. You're so tired you can't think straight, your school work suffers, you get depressed. It's like being in a horror movie.

If you actually see a bedbug then you have no idea how bad the problem truly is.

Eat the bed bugs. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

Spreading baking soda in and around walls and bed boards (and under mattresses/box springs) works too. It dries them out and kills them almost instantly. Another bedbug fact that this video should've covered is that their eggs can stay dormant for up to a year or a little more before hatching. So if you're infested keep that in mind.

For those who don't know, it's not that DDT stopped working, it's that they stopped using it. DDT had bed bugs on the brink of extinction, then they stopped using it; so now they are back.

My cleaning lady brought bedbugs into my house because she insisted on using her own vacuum when she cleaned. It was actually pretty easy to get rid of them but it takes time and diligence. You need to encapsulate your mattress and boxspring in sealed covers. At the same time spray down the entire bed frame with insecticide and coat the legs with petroleum jelly. Then wash and dry your bedding before putting it back on your bed. Make sure your bedding does not hang down and touch the floor. Also make sure you take off all your clothes and wipe off your feet anytime you get into bed. You need to cut off their food supply (you) and they will all die in about 6 months. It is extremely important that you do not reintroduce the bedbugs back into the bed so make certain they are not on you when you get into your bed. Their eggs can last up to two years so I would keep the covers on the mattress and box spring for two years. If you have no bites during that two year period you won the battle. Reward yourself with a new mattress and box spring.

After being bitten by mosquitoes, I hated them and always loved my blanket to escape by the mk while the AC is on. Until my encounter with the bedbugs, now I just hate sleeping on anything that has blankets. Never in my life I ever thought mosquitoes are the least worst pest than bedbugs

I'm still living with bed bugs in my apartment! Severe bites and scars all over my body. Now two of my cat's have been bitten by bed bugs. Told landlord on September 28 2021 about it she said can't get anyone out to my apartment until October 11 Monday. Texas law 7 days to take care of problem...so many compliments and lawsuits about this complex!
