My great uncle was given a battlefield commission !
He and his unit were dropped well behind German lines to take and hold a bridge from the Germans until Patons army could get there. Idk how many were left but he was given Battlefield commission to Captain when they got there.
It's on his gravestone and we all called him CAPTAIN till he died.

Audie Murphy was a baller, also Dick Meadows from Vietnam was a battle field commission and no joke, a Special Forces NCO given a battlefield commission for a number of insane MAC-V SOG missions, ended up as a major supporting Delta during Operation Eagle Claw

John Monash was the first soldier to be knighted in the field 12 August 1918 by the reigning monarch for 200 years.

He commanded American troops at the battle of Hamel 4 July 1918

Lest we forget.

Audie Murphy was my role model when I was trying to join the Army. I named my dog after him!🇺🇸

This should've never died down in popularity. I'd much rather have a Sgt turned Lt than a 22 year old nerd who can barely operate his rifle.

Gotta disagree on the reasoning for why it wasn't done in the GWOT, Captain.

Shortly after the beginning of the Global War on Terror, the Department of Defense announced that there would be no battlefield commissions authorized.

My ETT team on my first tour included a Captain who was summoned out of law school as his IRR time expired. There was literally a shortage of junior officers. Check it out, Preston; it's true. None were authorized.

Today’s military culture wouldn’t allow Audie Murphy to join and it’s also not conducive to promote hard chargers. Today’s military is to political compared to decades past

While Col. Howard (pictured second) received a DIRECT commission, he did NOT receive a battlefield commission. I had the honor of working for him in the early 80s in NC.
