I shoot in North-South Skirmish assoc matches and we have our National matches just outside of Winchester VA. We shoot Civil War cannons in matches and one of our teams had decided to stop by Gettysburg on their way home and had their 3 in ordnance rifle on a trailer behind their truck in the parking lot. They were stopped by the park police because they saw the cannon and thought they had stolen one of the parks cannons. It took them about an hour to sort things out but they let them go after they counted all of the parks cannon and realized none were missing. Never mind that all the Ozarks cannons were mounted on concrete and steel replica carriages and theirs was on a wooden one.

The only other thing I can think of that is an equivalent deafening roar of cannons was I just finished reading about the voyage of the Wager back in the 1740s and other ships in the same squadron. When those ships would engage in battle with another ship, it must have been pretty horrible… Lead balls going through peoples insides… It’s difficult to fathom how awful it must have sounded like and experienced.

A sobering place remembering all who gave their lives.

Can’t you just see it? The men coming up the hills or through the valleys there with all the chaos and smoke rising from the fields? Cannons and rifles sending deafening reports of fire and lead overhead, cutting through anything in their path. I sure am I glad I didn’t need to fight in THAT battle 😥

Hi folks… I was teaching here for a whole week and by and large I am pleased to report that Everyone I saw here was very respectful… The one instance, other than that was a minor thing, but I thought I’d point it out… There was a family at one of the sets of cannons and their eight-year-old or so child was climbing on one of the cannons… These are not play things… People sacrificed their lives here, and they are historic memorials. Please don’t let your kids climb on them or lean on them to take photos. Thanks.
