What Are Quarks? | Radioactivity | Physics | FuseSchool

Find out what quarks are, how they were discovered and why they are very important in relation to protons and neutrons. There are different types of quarks which you'll learn about in this GCSE / K12 "Radioactivity" video from FuseSchool.

Just wanted to add some additional information for anyone interested in quarks. Only the up quark and down quark are stable, the more massive quarks (strange, charm, top, bottom) quickly decay and produce up and down quarks. There is an antiparticle for each flavor of quark too, all of them unstable. The video explains that three quarks make up hadrons (protons and neutrons) but quarks also make up mesons and what makes them very interesting is mesons are composed of just 2 quarks, one of them an antiparticle, and they are unstable and last for fractions of a second.

Quarks are also the only elementary particles that experience all four fundamental forces of nature. Quarks don't appear to exist in isolation due to a phenomenon called color confinement.

Anyway, just a few extra details to add because I've been studying particle physics :-)

Isn't the world frustratingly but fascinatingly complicated.
This is a good time to be alive.

I suddenly got this overwhelming desire to munch on M&M candy after watching this.

If a quark was a millimetre wide, a proton would be a kilometre wide, and a hydrogen atom would be the size of Neptune.

What does the subatomic duck say?
Quark.
Yeah, studying extremely small things is extremely interesting for me; things like physics and microbiology are my most interesting subjects. Before this video, I had no idea what a quark was. Thanks for this video!

Beautiful explanation, I am only 14 and I love learning about chemistry. This helped me understand the next level of subatomic atoms. Thank you.

Would you ever do a video going deeper into the differences of the lesser talked about quarks (strange, charm, top, and bottom)?
Just wondering. Thanks.

Question. If quarks are fundamental particles. How can they decay? I mean I heard strange quarks for example decay into other quarks yet they aren't made of anything smaller? (that we know of)

I spent ages trying to find good information for some research I needed to do - I wish I had just come here straight away! Thanks much!

The code to unlock the secrets of the universe is:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Strange, Charm, Strange, Charm, Bottom, Top, [Start]😂🤣😅😊

Him : a proton has 2 up quarks and 1 down quark.
Me : THAT MEANS A NEUTRON HAS 1 UP QUARK AND 2 DOWN QUARKS!!!
Him : a neutron has 1 up quark and 2 down quarks
Me : 😀

I'm paying for great courses and had to come over here to figure out quarks. Thanks. They only have lectures not cartoony images
