The Schengen Agreement is regarded as a milestone of European integration. It allows travel across participating EU member states without border checks. Vehicles and trains also enjoy free movement across borders. But due to the ongoing influx of refugees, some EU states have suspended the agreement.

Even with sweden being sweden, the nordic passport union is very likely to survive the end of Schengen. It might even expand to include the Baltic states. In particular if the flow of labour between these states and the UK or EU halts. A unified Europe is a future we probably won't live to see, but a more integrated Europe is very likely, even without the EU.

This is the solution - not to devolve back into the old pre-EU nation-state borders which obviously have negative economic impacts. The solution as I see it is to bolster the borders where the Schengen area meets non-Schengen area nation-states. This is such an obvious solution to me.

How could an internal system suffer (let alone _shatter_) from an external influence?
EU outside borders must be controlled only. That simple.
We in Hungary could do (and have done) that, controlling our borders except those that are common with EU countries (Austria etc). If Austria decides to control our common border, it's a fault on their part, as that is an internal EU border... What is so difficult about it?

Less aggressive drivers, when individual countries have more say on that agreement

Having something like that for North America would be really cool.

Perhaps if you cared more about the humans than you did the Volkswagen engines, people wouldn't distrust the Schengen? Saturation of the labour market because people are given a red passport and promised the bounties of Europe.
