I feel a strong urge to remind people never to work more than what they are paid for. Sorry if this hurts someone's feelings. I work remotely for 6 years now. I clock 8 hours every day, never more - unless I'm asked to, but then I make sure I'm compensated. Remember that job is just a job. For them, no matter what they say about "getting you energized", it means getting you energized to do the job, nothing else. Companies don't care about you, they care about profit - and you're just a cost. They'll do everything to make it look otherwise, but that's the truth. Of course, it might happen your boss is cool or something, but bottom line stays the same. Focus on yourself and your family guys, never on work - with essentially is trading your time for money. If you want to buy a Big Mac and it's 5$, you don't pay 7$ don't you? So why give more of your time you won't ever get back?

I really like my remote job. I guess it depends from company to company but my job has well defined boundaries. I definitely relate with forgetting to eat tho lol

Thanks for putting out such a balanced and objective analysis. I appreciate how you focused on the downsides of remote work but without making it sound one sided. Great video, Kyle!

WOW what a video...this is exactly how I feel. It's so hard to stay focused sometimes. I also find myself responding to work emails at 11 pm. My managers respond back immediately. There are no longer any boundaries you nailed it

I feel like people who first started working fully remotely during the quarantine have a different experience than those who started doing it during more normal times. Being forced to a remote workplace and having the option to do it and organize your life around it are two different things.

I'm currently in a remote job. Honestly it's okay, but boundaries are needed. I have a time to clock in and clock out.

As a freelancer, I learned about the timezone issue the hard way. It's very hard to manage when you have one client 3 hours behind you and another client half an hour behind you and you're getting messages for updates at 3 in the morning

About separating work and other activities: at some point I noticed that my desk is now associated with work and I can't bring myself to enjoy my hobbies during my time off because once I sit on the chair and put my hands on the desk I'm into my work mode.

I was office based for over 20 years - always found the noise distracting. I've been home based for over 3 years now and I absolutely love it. My own office, no distractions, I control the heat, the light, everything. No travel to work. I'm much more productive. They move us to work on different project teams so easily, so we're always progressing and don't stagnate. I live hundreds of miles away from the rest of my current dev team, but that doesn't matter.

I have a separate laptop for work. When my work shift starts, I take the laptop out of the backpack and start working. When I stop working, I put the laptop away. This helps create boundaries between work and non-work. Where I blur the boundaries is when I do laundry, cook, and do other personal tasks during my work day. To make up for this, I might stretch my work shift beyond 8 hours to ensure that I still do 8 hours of work. But I still work close to the same hours that I work in the office.

The struggle for me during the pandemic is that I'm asked to work from home as much as I can even though the nature of my work (IT desktop support) is designed to be done in the office and much of it can only be done there. Therefore, I'm currently working two days in the office and three at home each week. When I'm at home, I sometimes run out of things to do and have to wait for my next scheduled office visit to start another task (such as preparing a laptop for a new employee or giving someone a replacement headset). I'd much rather work either entirely in the office or change careers and work entirely from home. I have other reasons for wanting to work remotely, too: I'm an avid hiker and have explored my area well. I'd like to relocate every year or two (to a place of my choice) so I have all new trails to explore on weekends. Also, I taught English abroad for five years a long time ago and miss living overseas, so I'd like to have that option again. These are the reasons I'm learning coding now in my free time. However, it remains to be seen whether I'll enjoy programming enough to make a career out of it.

It’s definitely right for me. Luckily I have a lot of experience working remote and with a flex schedule so I know it’s the one for me

Learn X in Y minutes playlist has become my go to. Can you make videos on Node.js and MongoDB to add to that list? Would be very helpful.

A benefit that I like about working remotely is that I dont spend 2+ hours of each day on public transport and the costs involved.

I once applied for X team and got rejected, almost a year ago. Now working successfully on Upwork. Wish to try again someday 😂
