Where are the best cities for remote working?

Please stop saying that people should consider South Africa, every sane person is running away from there even if it means leaving big chunk of their wealth behind.

It cracks me up that Sydney or any other city in Australia could make this list. Australia is a country on the way out.

Why would a nomad want to go to a ridiculously expensive city like Sydney, when the entire world is open to them?

I’m living in Sydney after moving from Melbourne. You can’t get in to or leave Australia atm. The internet in this country is garbage. Crime is low and weather is beautiful. Housing cost is outrageous. If you aren’t born here then no reason to come except for a holiday.

Comparing dodgy parts in Cape Town to dodgy parts of Sydney is like comparing tigers to kittens

I have spent a total of 4 months, so far, in Shkembi i Kavajes, Albania and I'm ready to lease for a year when I come back in late Spring, 2022. Your statement about paying more if you get more really resonates with me and it is a big part of why I am putting together a Trifecta with Eastern Europe an SE Asia at the core.

You are correct with your oft mentioned point that these lists tend to be very Eurocentric and while there are great places in Europe to visit, it is far too expensive and bureaucratic to be places to live. Of this list, only Krakow gets my heart racing. However, like nearly all of Western Europe, it is a place to visit not to live. With white hansom cabs taking you around old town an lots and lots of cute restaurants, you definitely want to go there with a partner. However, in my opinion, most people will get bored after about two weeks.

People have screwy notions about being a 'Nomad Capitalist'. Working on the beach? That is a horrible work environment and I've never done it.. Right now, my work space does overlook the beach and the Adriatic, but I'm not ON the beach for any significant time. I work at least 10 hours M-F and at least 4 hours on Saturday, so my most significant ambience thing is to have lots of lunches and dinners at beachside cafes. . My biggest recreational activity is shopping with my wife. So, that matters. And I walk a lot, so, I guess, some scenery is nice.

It's great having you around. You provide very useful perspective for people who seriously work and have no inborn anchor.

Remote working offshore, in my experience - First, they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they argue with you, then you win - THEN they ask how you did it! My list.... Novi Sad, Krackow, Lviv, Lisbon, Plovdiv & KL - stay a few months in each place.

It is interesting to see the difference of opinion between a journalist, and a professional. In my experience, the professional sees things from a more realistic perspective, and is not caught up in fantasies.

How about countries that are not locking down and requiring masks and vax?

Wi-fi can always be an issue. Not all resorts/hotel have reliable wi-fi, and then you may be sharing it. A personal hot-spot w/ VPN comes in handy when traveling.

I see a lot of videos of "digital nomads" in Bulgaria since it's inexpensive, good food, and variety of nature. Looking forward to visit.

Hmm, no way Australia should be on that list. And Spain unfortunately very bad from taxes point of view.

Spending a month in Barcelona in September while getting a qualification there, the plan was to stick around but Belgrade is looking mighty tempting. Cheaper, less chance of insanity with lockdowns etc come autumn / winter.
