What’s a girl to do after she breaks boundaries and saves an entire nation? Get married of course! In the straight to video sequel to the classic Disney film, Mulan, Mulan II takes audiences on a new adventure where Mulan, Shang, their friends Yao, Chien-Po and Ling must escort three princesses to their respective weddings- which have been arranged without them ever meeting the princes! While the OG film boasted beautiful animation and challenged gender norms, this sequel is a horse of an entirely different color, in which our fellow warriors didn't grow at ALL and our girl goes from warrior woman, to basic. I’m Kris Carr, and today’s Nostalgia Trip, I want to talk to you about Mulan II.

I can't agree that Mulan's song in the beginning teaches girls to "find someone to have balance" or just "be kind and gentle".
It says that you can't _only_ be one thing (hard like a rock, firm like an oak; e.g. the fighter they think Mulan is) because that way you will be out of balance. You need to be more than the one label you put on yourself: you need to be gentle _as well as_ strong, flexible _as well as_ firm.
Mulan isn't just a warrior, she's also a woman, a daughter, etc.
The "lesson number one" is that, in order to have balance, you need to accept and love all of your sides. And it's a damn good lesson :)

Honestly this movie was MEANT to be forgotten for very good reason, especially screwing over Mushi to become this unlikable.

We don't talk about this movie.

Except I Wanna Be Like Other Girls, that song's a bop

Fun fact: Mulan was mostly animated at Disney World along with Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear. Disney used to have an animation studio at DHS (back then it was Disney's MGM Studios)

I feel like the film had so much potential and could’ve been more consistent with the first film. Mulan’s relationship with Shang could’ve been written better with maybe one major disagreement that was probably could’ve been about the arranged marriage situation. Though this is just my opinion and I would like to hear you’re thoughts on what could’ve been changed.

In the first movie Mushu is the annoying but kinda funny sidekick, but in the sequel he's technically the Disney villain. Even more than the leader of the Huns in the first one.

I remember Mulan 2, it did not recieve a lot of positive attention i mean i for one enjoyed it but i've heard many people call it one of the most unnecessary sequels in the history of animated Disney films.

Classic Eggman: I'm gonna dedicate the rest of my life to forgetting it.

Mulan 2 feels honestly out of place: it feels more like a Saturday morning cartoon then a flim. It didn't help that the writers either kept the characters the same or downgraded them in someway. It was a waste of potential in terms of story

Side note: I'm first comment.~

The the stage production of Mulan, they combine “Make a Man Out of You” and “Lesson No. 1” and it’s to point out more of the Ying and Yang duality. But it’s not really about being soft vs rough, more like being smart and strong

I absolutely loved this film, genuinely, I wrote a whole analysis about it, but to put it short. Dont let the internet tell you your opinion, make your own.

The movie should have just been a spinoff with the other 3 couples. They were the best parts of the movie.

Edit: Nevermind... they're pretty bad too...

In my case, Mulan 2 is not bad by any means. Though I’ll admit it’s cheesy at times, the emotional weight, morals and heart of the film make up for it 💯

I always kinda liked this movie. Mulan and Shang were weirdish. But I loved the Guard/Princess romance

I'm glad they mentioned Teepublic. I was skeptical at first but now I can rest easy and indulge in my fandoms

Here is the thing. The movie could have been AMAZING. Even throwing out historical accuracy

try this

Mulan and Shang are fighting over differences heart verses duty. They are discouraged from marrying by Mushu because she is becoming more and more miserable as their wedding date approaches.

the escort ONE princess for an arranged marriage. The boys can come along, I’ll deal with them.

The movie does NOT take place on an adventure but rather AT COURT where the two engaged royals need the help of our heroes to secretly meet and talk because both are scared about marrying a stranger. Que fish out of water songs as princess must adjust to weird cloths and new customs quickly because the court is cruel and judgmental and she will be the future queen.

Mushu overhears the prince telling his maids that he wishes he could talk to his future bride. Mushu then becomes kind of invested in helping the prince and princess meet. Tells mulan to talk to the prince’s maids.

let’s have three maids who dote on prince like older sisters and protect him - interesting love interest for the boys that will serve a plot purpose BESIDES being love interest.

I’m Thinking

Tomboyish personal guard /suggested assassin
Food taster / because poison but she’s also low key a food critic
Entertainer / court jester idea

We can keep the guys motifs only in this it has a little more purpose

And instead of girl worshipping him she respects him as a fellow warrior

Toss in some pretty poetry written between the royal couple, Shang and mulan learn that the key to love is communicating. Boys and maids feel conflicted because of being thrown together so much has resulted in shared feelings but they are from different courts. And eventually will have to separate from each other.

Let’s keep carnival date idea only

It’s planned BY Shang and Mulan. Shang and Mulan impersonate the royals in cliche bed scene But are eventually caught. Then locked up tell prince orders their freedom later.

Royal guard is alerted and now boys and maids have to work together to throw the guards off the track of the runaway royal couple. Cue wacky Hijinks and slapstick humor as well as showing how well the maids and the boys work together.

The royal couple see some poverty while hiding and talk about how when they are on the throne they want to help the poor, educate girls (as he’s sad his big sister maids will never be able to join court as the law stands). Whatever. They now have a shared world view and goal as royals.

Mulan chooses duty, (serving the princess she now considers a sister) over heart ( Shang) and sadly says that she must stay to serve the princess who is facing hate from the court for being a foreigner.

Shang returns to China with the guys, seemingly having said goodbye to mulan, but actually he is choosing heart over his duty to China.

He delivers the message that Mulan is staying with the princess as an advisor - but also that he and the boys are leaving China to stay with the princess.

Shang joins to royal guard and now has to work his way up the ranks without the aid of his father’s name.

And there a full role reversal indicating they understand each other more

The only thing I can say I liked were the voice actors for the princesses. Gwendoline Yeo, Lucy Liu and Lauren Tom

As a little kid I really liked the movie haha. So I see it in a positive nostalgic light.
I liked how the princesses were the perfect matches for the 3 guys but they couldn't be together.
Though nostalgia aside if I were to see this now the cynical person Ive become my eyes would've rolled all the way around 😂
